My dog whined, yelled, and wouldn't get up, but is fine now. Why?

This behavior could be a sign that Buddy is sick or in pain. Given that he has a consistent routine that hasn't changed, I would be thinking that may be the case. I'd take him into a vet today for a health check.

Whining is an attention seeking behavior and can be a sign of anxiety, pain or potentially boredom. The shaking can also be a sign of pain or anxiety. If you think he might be in pain you should see a veterinarian to see if they can localize the pain to a specific area. If you think he may be anxious it could help to try to identify what might be triggering the anxiety - some dogs have storm or noise phobias, or he might be anxious about a change in routine or environment.

If you don't have any specific symptoms that need to be addressed, your vet will likely want to perform an initial general exam, including looking in the mouth, eyes, ears, etc, and palpating the body for any signs of pain. They'll also want to take a history of information such as when the whining started, if it's in a pattern or linked to anything, what he's eating, bowel and urinary habits, etc. If anything seems out of the ordinary, your vet will then likely recommend any specific tests to rule out issues.

This could be due to a behavioral change (anxiety, fear, etc.) or it could be caused by an underlying health problem. Pain and discomfort due to a variety of causes can make dogs vocalize and seek human attention. I recommend taking him to your vet for a health evaluation to make sure that there is not a physical cause of this behavior change. If only Milo could talk! This type of behavior could be related to something like anxiety or to pain/discomfort. I recommend to have him examined by the veterinarian who will check for evidence of pain on the physical exam. Many times this type of sudden pain is related to intervertebral disc disease, discospondylitis, upper abdominal pain or a pinched nerve. If Buddy seems off and is whimpering and vomiting, he may have something going on causing him discomfort. Because of his age, I would be suspicious of a viral infection, something he ate that he is having an indiscretion to or a foreign object he ate that is lodged somewhere in his intestines causing problems. Because there are multiple causes and it is difficult to determine what it is for sure, I would have a veterinarian examine Buddy so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I would consider having his blood tested and abdominal x-rays taken. I hope this helps and that Buddy gets better soon! Poor Kilo! His laying down and whining could be a sign of pain or anxiety. Without a few extra details, I can't hazard a better guess as to the cause of his whining. A vet should examine Kilo and can discuss any necessary diagnostics or treatments.
