Why is my dog whining, crying, and stretching like he's in pain?

It does sound like your dog could be in pain, and that could be causing the restlessness at night. He simply can't find a position that he is comfortable in, and it hurts to curl up. He could have an injury to his neck, spine, hips, or limbs. I would take him into the vet today for an exam. He may also benefit from pain medications if he is in pain. Do not give him any human pain medications, many are toxic to dogs and fatal if given. The vet can prescribe him safe pain medications if needed.

Just because you were unable to elicit a pain response from Chapman does not necessarily mean he isn't uncomfortable or painful somewhere in the body. It's hard to know where the problem is exactly and what is causing it, but Charlie is in pain, no doubt about it. i would recommend taking him to the vet ASAP, it could be a slipped disk in the spine, a trauma or an internal condition and as the pain sounds severe it is in my opinion quite urgent.

He may have a muscle sprain. If he continues to behave in this manner, its best to get him seen b your vet for a full physical exam to try and localize the painful area and get her on pet friendly pain medication to help her get more comfortable.
