My dog lost his voice, is weak, and can't stand. What's wrong?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Gizmo. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian today. An upper respiratory tract infection can lead to a loss of voice and a decrease in appetite. The heavy breathing is worrisome though and can indicate a more serious problem. The veterinarian will examine him and listen closely to his lungs. If the lungs do not sound normal, x-rays of his chest may be warranted. I hope this information helps!

Sorry to hear that Bruno's lost his bark. A change in barking sound or a loss of bark can be associated with a few different conditions. While a collapsing trachea or an upper respiratory infection are certain possibilities, they are not the most common cause for this symptom. There is a condition known as laryngeal paralysis that is known to cause this symptom quite frequently. Regardless of what the cause is, it is unlikely to resolve on its own without some treatment. You should take Bruno into the vet for a physical exam and some diagnostic imaging. They will be able to tell you whether or not one of the above mentioned conditions is causing Bruno's current issues. Hope this helps!

This could be normal or it could be sign of an infection. If he is coughing, sneezing, lethargic or decreased appetite then I would consider taking him to the vet. Any of these signs could be additional clues that he could have an upper respiratory infection. If Max is a big barker and has recently been barking a lot then he potentially could have just lost his voice that we do sometimes. Over a few days, it should return to normal if that's the case. You can try 25mg (one adult tablet) of Benadryl twice a day in case it is allergy related. I have seen some dogs just have a small change in the voice as they get older but it usually a gradual change. If his voice isn't improving, worsens or he starts to have any of the above symptoms then I would have your vet take a look at him. your vet will be able to do an exam and listen to his heart/lungs to ensure everything is clear. Your vet will also be able to do blood work and X-rays if needed and provide the proper meds. I hope this helps!

He may have a respiratory infection that requires an oral antibiotic for treatment. The coughing and sneezing, especially if accompanied by nasal discharge can be caused by an upper respiratory infection or even pneumonia. These conditions require a veterinary exam and potentially bloodwork and x-rays to diagnose and treat. I recommend having Trigo seen by a vet as soon as possible. Coughing, especially when accompanied by nasal discharge, can be a sign of an upper respiratory infection. However, it can also be a sign of a lower respiratory issue, such as pneumonia and it is concerning that Honey has some episodes of lethargy, as this indicates that she is not feeling well.
