My puppy has loose stool after vet meds. Is it lactose intolerance?

I think the stool is looking OK for what he is eating. I really don't recommend giving any dairy products when a dog has diarrhea. Cottage cheese is not really something I would suggest. At this stage you should put him back on his regular food and add in a probiotic (one made for dogs, not people). I like Fortiflora and you should use it for a minimum of 14 days. Cheese can certainly cause diarrhea, along with stress if he was just adopted. I would stop all extra snacks and offer him a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice to help settle his stomach, and then slowly introduce his regular food back in without any extras or treats until he is settled. If the diarrhea continues, or he shows any other signs of illness, a vet visit is best to rule out any health issues.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am sorry to hear Rusty isn't feeling well. I recommend taking Rusty to the vet with a fresh stool sample. There is a possibility he has microscopic intestinal parasites. This is common in puppies and causes diarrhea. I would not change his food as that is likely to make the loose stool worse. There is no deworming medicine that treats all parasites so even if he has been dewormed, it doesn't mean there isn't something there. Good luck and kisses to Rusty!

Do not discontinue the Lactulose without the advice of the prescribing veterinarian. This may lead to constipation again. The dose and/or frequency of Lactulose will likely be adjusted by the veterinarian. In the meantime, a short fast followed by a bland diet fed in small, frequent amounts may help to resolve the diarrhea. You can discuss the use of veterinary probiotics, such as ProViable, ProStora or FortiFlora, with your veterinarian. These may promote gut health and aid in resolution of mild diarrhea as well.

This could still be from the parvo. Puppies can have abnormal stool on and off for up to a month after surviving the disease. If that’s not the case, often a prescription strength high fiber or hydrolyzed protein diet will help. There are some cases that will not respond to diet, and at that point your vet can discuss referral to an internist, further testing, or medications like Tylan powder to help. The short answer is...yes. Plain canned pumpkin (NOT pie filling) can be used to add fiber to the diet, promote healthy stool and a healthy gut, but may cause loose stool if too much is given or if Romeo has an allergy to pumpkin. The rule of thumb is 1 teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight once or twice daily. Decrease the amount if the stool is soft. As long as he is behaving normally, he does not need to be seen by your veterinarian. What you can do at home is withhold food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small amounts until the stool is normal then transition slowly back to his regular diet. You can try the pumpkin again at a later date, but if he develops loose stools, then discontinue it and consider an alternative. Make sure he has plenty of fresh, clean water to drink at all times. Dehydration may cause firm stool. Monitor for lethargy, vomiting persistent diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. These are symptoms that should be addressed right away by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER.

Poor Penny. You're doing the right thing by first trying to fast her. Try adding in 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the filling) in her food once a day. If she is still having really loose stools by tomorrow, then she needs to see your vet. She may have a parasite problem or another internal illness (i.e. Pancreas, Liver disease, Gallbladder disease) that subsequently causes abnormal stools. The vet will know what to check and test for to determine the cause. I hope Penny gets better soon.
