My dog has diarrhea after taking Lactulose. What should I do?

The lactulose should be out of his system by now, but it's possible that the diarrhea triggered by the medication will continue for a few days. If he has had diarrhea for the past three days and it seems to be getting worse I would recommend seeing your veterinarian. Sometimes diarrhea will continue unless treatment is started. If this is the first day Mau has had diarrhea it's also possible that the lactulose is not the cause: if he is otherwise healthy and eating/drinking well with no vomiting I think you could monitor him for 24-48 hours but if it does not improve during that time you should see your veterinarian.

It would be best to consult with your veterinarian before changing treatment or giving other medications. Legally, we are prohibited from recommending medications or dosing information in the absence of a physical exam and a patient-veterinarian-client relationship. You can try withholding food for 24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or an unflavored electrolyte replacement beverage. Resume feeding a bland diet in small frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. Transition slowly to the regular diet afterwards. A stool sample should be submitted to diagnose intestinal parasites or bacterial overgrowth. A veterinary probiotic such as Prostora, FortiFlora or ProViable may promote gut health.

Typically if you give your pet probiotics this will help with the diarrhea. I would recommend giving Culturelle over the counter to the food daily and hopefully this is enough to get things back to normal. However some pets will have severe bacteria dysbiosis (imbalance) which requires an additional antibiotic to get things to clear up completely. Typically I prescribe Metronidazole and this does great to get pets back to normal fast.

If your vet prescribed lactulose for him to help with this specific issue, then yes - you could definitely use that according to the instructions you were given, as it often helps to make stool softer and easier to pass. Feeding wet food only might also be helpful, as this can be a good way of increasing the moisture content in the diet and often helps to make hard stools softer.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Any medication you give a lactating dog will be passed through the milk to the puppy. I do not suggest any human medications and if her diarrhea is severe you should have her examined by your Vet and a fecal test ran to rule out intestinal parasites. It easily could be the food you are feeding as she should be eating a puppy food. I would try a bland diet of boiled chicken and hamburger with rice for a few says. A probiotic should be fine, I like Purina Fortiflora. I hope this helps!

Hello. There is no need to give the Lactulose at this time. If he is not constipated or having difficulty defecating, the Lactulose could give him a very soft stool that might get stuck even more. These signs could be compatible with a colitis, which is an inflammation of the last part of the intestine, the colon, usually related to dietary indiscretion. As a first approach, I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. A probiotic like pro-kolin can be added to the diet. I would definitely recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence.
