Why does my dog get loose stool during runs? Is it a concern?

I am sorry to hear about Sam! If he is otherwise acting normally (normal energy, normal appetite, no vomiting) I would just monitor him and watch his next few bowel movements. Sometimes exercise can increase gastrointestinal activity, and stress can also sometimes cause some diarrhea (being out of town can be stressful). If he continues to have loose stool then seeing his vet is recommended.

Hello. Probably not. Exercise can & will facilitate bowel movements, & the faster stool moves through the bowels, the less water is absorbed making the stools a little softer. This may be just normal for your pup. If anything changes, of course discuss this with your veterinarian, but if everything else is OK, I would not be too worried. It is not uncommon for dogs to try to go more frequently during long walks and is likely related to a territory marking instinct. As long as this does not persist to cover every bowel movement or any increasing frequency at home I wold continue to monitor for any additional signs or weight loss. Consider adding a probiotic/fiber supplement such as fortiflora as a natural gut conditioner if stool quality is generally soft

Hi, I would not worry if Pogi is well in himself apart from this runny poo. As you say, sometimes it can vary quite a bit according to what they have eaten or for other factors, perhaps feeling a bit under the weather etc. Keep an eye on his next poo. If he does more of these feaces, I would recommend to have him checked over and at least have a feacal test done. Try to feed him his usual diet and keep an eye on his appetite. If his next toilet looks the same you could try to offer him a bland, easy to digest diet such as chicken and rice, fish and rice or Hill’s I/D. Hope he does not give you any more worries !

If the runny stool is only occurring after a car ride, its likely the excitement causing it. This is not unusual and is nothing to worry about. If the stool is consistently runny, then take Bronson into the veterinarian to have a sample checked for parasites. Runny stool can be caused by many different things! Based on your description, Wade may have a condition called colitis. This is an inflammation in the large intestine most often caused by a change in diet, eating something they are not used to or a stressful event. It can be secondary to many other things. It often results in diarrhea/loose stools and straining to defecate. If he's acting normal otherwise, you can start by withholding food for 12-24 hours, then introducing a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and white rice. You can also add some canned pumpkin puree as the fiber can help to firm up the stools. As long as the stools normalize, you can then start mixing in his regular dog food. If the diarrhea continues despite these things, I would recommend taking him to a veterinarian for an exam. They will most likely recommend a fecal exam to look for parasites and sometimes when colitis doesn't resolve on it's own, they are treated with an antibiotic.

This doesn't really sound like an issue to me - dogs can sometimes change their behavior patterns when it comes to the frequency of defecation and it doesn't usually mean there's a problem as long as the stool appears normal. It is also quite common for the first stool to be normal and subsequent stools softer, particularly if the dog is exercising. As long as Oakley has a good appetite, is not losing weight, and does not have blood or mucous in his stool you probably don't need to be concerned.
