Rescued dog has long nails. Will the vet report me for neglect?

Hi there and thanks for your question! Yes dogs with a heart condition can get their nails trimmed. A vet may want to do this in as stress free manner as possible to not overly stress the dog during the procedure. Letting nails grow out to be overly long to the point where they are causing mobility problems or puncturing the paw pads is considered a form of neglect by some veterinarians.

There is no reason for any veterinarian not to see your dog only because there are no records. The nails need to be cut by someone who knows how. Please try another veterinarian or possibly a groomer.

They won't take Brent away and put you in jail for not clipping his nails! It sounds like he does need his nails clipped, and if you are having trouble doing it yourself, I would take him into the vet. The good news is that getting your dog's nails clipped is actually really cheap as long as he doesn't need a sedative to do it. Typically it costs between $10-$15 to get it done. Not much at all! I would call local clinics to get their price, and make an appointment for him. I hope this helps!

Its impossible to know with out examining the quick of the nail. if the quick of the nail is cut, it will cause pain and bleed. I recommend to have the veterinarian cut the nails at least this one time since they are the best ones to know if there are concerns with the length of the quicks. Hi. Any veterinary clinic will see her and trim her nails even if not up to.date on vacciens. She most likely will need antibiotics and pain medications as well. If there is question on vaccines, they can update them again if that helps them. And she probly is in pain if she is limping. Good luck.

Your dog will likely need to be sedated in order to examine the nails and treat the injured nail. At the same time you should have the other nails shortened. It is unlikely that this can be done at the walk in clinic. You can call the store and find out. Otherwise I suggest you find a veterinary office that is open today and have the nail taken care of today, as this is very painful.

Hello. Ouch! Morty did break the nail at the quick. Honestly, it would be best to take Morty to your vet & just clip the nail off. It will hurt for a second, but leaving the nail like this will cause constant pain, & may lead to an infection up the nail bed.
