Can a vet trim nails on a dog with heart issues? Are long nails neglect?

I would recommend just being forth right with the veterinarian about your dog's history and your desire to get him in a healthy state. At the time of the appointment the veterinarian can discuss any neglect concerns with you.

Its impossible to know with out examining the quick of the nail. if the quick of the nail is cut, it will cause pain and bleed. I recommend to have the veterinarian cut the nails at least this one time since they are the best ones to know if there are concerns with the length of the quicks. Moving forward, make sure the groomer is clipping her nails. Best of luck.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Spock and his owner. It is very nice of you to look after him. You can trim his nails. Just be careful to avoid the vessel in the nail. Start off with only a little at a time. Sometimes if the nail are white you can see where the vessel is. Unfortunately if they are black it will be harder. You can have flour on hand to put on the nail if it starts to bleed. The back nails tend to get nicked easier. If you are worried most Vets will have the technicians do the nails for cheaper if Spock is a client. So if you know his Vet's number you can call and see if that is an option. Though a trip to the vet may be stressful, it will be over and done with in 1 fail swoop that way, and you can also schedule a physical exam. It may be that Mia has some arthritis pain or other issues that are contributing to her limping, so a good once over would be best, and then nails can be trimmed as well. They won't take Brent away and put you in jail for not clipping his nails! It sounds like he does need his nails clipped, and if you are having trouble doing it yourself, I would take him into the vet. The good news is that getting your dog's nails clipped is actually really cheap as long as he doesn't need a sedative to do it. Typically it costs between $10-$15 to get it done. Not much at all! I would call local clinics to get their price, and make an appointment for him. I hope this helps!

There is no reason for any veterinarian not to see your dog only because there are no records. The nails need to be cut by someone who knows how. Please try another veterinarian or possibly a groomer.

Hi, I think they could do with a trim but the reason why he is yelping is probably because he is not used to have his nails trimmed. All dogs react to having them done unless they got used to the whole process gradually and with positive reinforcement. Have a look on you tube on several ways to get them used to have their nails done, you would normally start by him accepting to have his paws touched and praising, giving treats. If you are in doubt, you could always ask a behaviourist or a reputable dog trainer to help.
