How long does my pet's liver enzyme medication stay in their body?

Veterinarians use medications like udiliv to treat liver disease and certain gallstones. It helps with regeneration of healthy liver tissue and some dogs stay on the medication long term. Your vet may want to keep your dog on the medication for 3 months and then recheck his bloodwork to see the improvement. If his liver values stay down after coming off the medication than he doesn't need it any longer. If not, he may need to stay on it long term.

Udiliv works by thinning and improving the flow of bile through the liver, reducing obstructions and bile stasis which result in elevated enzyme levels such as sgpt. If there is still a cause of inflammation or active liver disease present, these enzymes may start to increase again after the udiliv course has finished - where this is the case further investigation and treatment of the liver disease is required

Hello. The dose range for Ursodiol is 10-15 mg/kg every 12- 24 hours, depending on how severe the hepatobiliary disease is. This is equal to 68 - 102 mgs for a 15 pound dog. This medication has a wide range of safety, so 1/2 tablet will not be harmful to your pet. However, if Casper were to develop any adverse signs such as diarrhea, then the dose may need to be modified. Otherwise, do follow your veterinarians recommendation. When the liver suffers an insult (such as a toxicity) it can take some time for it to regenerate/repair and all values to return to normal. This process can take months. Typical supportive medications given to dogs with liver injury include Denamarin, Vitamin E, Acetylcysteine, and Ursodiol. A prescription hepatic diet (such as Hill's L/D or Royal Canin Hepatic) may also aid in decreasing any ongoing liver injury. Ursodiol is an oral medication, available by prescription only, that can add in reducing bilirubin by stimulating bile flow from the gallbladder through the biliary tree. It cannot be used if there is underlying gallbladder disorder, such as a gallbladder mucocele (gallstone). Your veterinarian will prescribe this if they feel this will benefit Tasha's recovery. You can certainly schedule a recheck with Tasha's veterinarian to discuss any additional medications or treatment options that may benefit her. The liver is a highly regenerative organ, and if given the proper support can make a complete or near-complete recovery.

Pardale is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication that contains acetaminophen and codeine. Acetaminophen can cause liver toxicity in some dogs, especially if used inappropriately. Since he seems to be feeling better, there is a chance his liver will go back to normal with the discontinuation of the drug. Your vet could put him on a liver supplement, like Denamarin, to help his liver function better. Your vet can repeat bloodwork in a month to recheck his values. I would definitely be reluctant to put him back on a non-steroidal type medication for his arthritis or use one in very low doses. You could put him on a joint supplement, like Dasuquin and see if that help his joints.

Hello. There are many underlying causes for high liver values, some more serious than others. The beauty of our livers is it is the only organ that can heal & regenerate once an insult is removed. I am not sure what your veterinarian hoped to accomplish keeping Lucy over night, but if she is otherwise feeling well, use of the Denamarin & prudent monitoring of the liver values is a good start. It would be helpful to obtain a bile acid assay & abdominal ultrasound to try & get as much information as possible about the liver, but the Denamarin can protect the liver from further oxidative injury. It will not help much if this is cancer, or an active hepatitis or infection, but it has helped to bring the enzyme levels down in some patients. Once you can obtain more detailed information about the liver can you determine how absolutely serious this might be. While I can't speak to ursodiol's side effect profile in people, I can tell you that ursodiol does not cause diabetes or exacerbate existing diabetes in dogs. Continue working closely with Mindy's vet to regulate her diabetes and liver dysfunction. I don't see any contraindications or interactions between insulin, ursodiol, and Denamarin.
