My dog takes Ursodiol for liver issues. Can it cause or worsen diabetes?

Hello. The dose range for Ursodiol is 10-15 mg/kg every 12- 24 hours, depending on how severe the hepatobiliary disease is. This is equal to 68 - 102 mgs for a 15 pound dog. This medication has a wide range of safety, so 1/2 tablet will not be harmful to your pet. However, if Casper were to develop any adverse signs such as diarrhea, then the dose may need to be modified. Otherwise, do follow your veterinarians recommendation. Veterinarians use medications like udiliv to treat liver disease and certain gallstones. It helps with regeneration of healthy liver tissue and some dogs stay on the medication long term. Your vet may want to keep your dog on the medication for 3 months and then recheck his bloodwork to see the improvement. If his liver values stay down after coming off the medication than he doesn't need it any longer. If not, he may need to stay on it long term.

An enlarged liver is unfortunately one of the common side effects of Cushing's disease so it is not unusual that Ginger's liver appeared enlarged. Her urine concentration is very low (normal for a dog is 1.040) but again, this can be attributed to her Cushing's disease as well (because she is probably drinking more water and therefore causing her urine to be more dilute). In Ginger's case I would be worried about Diabetes and possibly cancer as well. I know it can be frustrating (and expensive) to keep doing more tests, especially when you aren't getting clear answers as to what is going on. I would recommend talking to your vet about costs/additional testing versus palliative care/keeping her comfortable for the time being. Denamarin is a good choice for Dahilia. This drug speeds up liver cells healing and protects healthy cells from getting damaged. Any wide-spectrum antibiotic can be used. Amoxicillin/clavulanic acid for 2-3 weeks would be a good choice. If her blood results showed also jaundice, she should be put on ursodeoxycholic acid tablets.

Diabetes in dogs is often idiopathic (no underlying cause) and is just a genetic predisposition in dogs. It can sometimes be caused by eating fatty foods and being overweight often, but more often than not its genetic and breed specific in dogs. Cat diabetes is more often caused by being overweight. Since this is a supplement, then long term effects are minimal, but if wondering you should call the manufacturer of the supplement to ask for a list. Each manufacturer is different, so its best to go to the source with questions. : ) If your pet has an underlying cardiac disease, then that disease can lead to high blood pressure, so its best to get Chhutki's pressures checked regularly to determine if she needs additional regulating medication(s). I am sorry to hear that Mello has not been well. If liver ultrasound is not conclusive, the best way to go forward is to take liver biopsy - this usually gives definite answer what is going on with the liver. Gall bladder stones are very rare in dogs but relatively easy to pick up during ultrasound scan. My advise would be to discuss liver biopsy with your vet. The supplement you bought is not going to hurt your dog, but at the same time it is very unlikely that it is going to help much if it is not used alongside proper diagnostics and other medical treatment.
