My Shih Tzu puppy has liquid poop on antibiotics. Is it a side effect?

Black stools is usually a sign of bleeding from the stomach or small intestines, it's definitely not a good sign and is not likely to be due to the antibiotics. i would recommend taking Curt back to the vet ASAP for re-evaluation of the situation.

I would call your vet to see if it could be a side effect of the medications prescribed. Remember, if no food goes in, there won’t be stool to come out, so I think the biggest problem is not wanting to eat/nausea. Some medications can cause this to happen. Or there could be a second issue causing the poor appetite. You can try bland human foods like boiled chicken breast and cooked white rice to entice Lucky to eat.

Hello! I wouldn’t be too worried about lily at this point. if she is otherwise feeling good, I might try her on a very bland diet for a few days. An example of a bland diet would be boiled skinless chicken breast and steamed white rice (1 part chicken to 2-3 parts rice). If the diarrhea is persisting or if her appetite decreases or if she begins vomiting then I would have her veterinarian evaluate her. It would be a good idea to bring a sample of her stool in if the diarrhea continues so her vet can screen for intestinal parasites. I hope lily is back to herself very soon!

An abrupt change in diet could cause diarrhea, but there are many other potential causes as well ranging from intestinal parasites to infections. If the diarrhea is not resolving in the next few days or if Appa continues to act lethargic you should have him examined by your vet.

This very well maybe a side effect is the antibiotic. If he is still eating and drinking and there is no blood in the stool, you can add a canine pro biotic to his food to see if that helps. You can also try boiled chicken and rice as a diet. If it get worse and he stops eating I would stop the medication until you can get him seen.

Very small and very young dogs can quickly get dehydrated and develop low blood sugar if they have vomiting and diarrhea, so I would recommend taking Tinny Bubbles to the veterinarian as soon as possible to have her evaluated. If she is dehydrated your vet can give her fluids under her skin. They can also give her medication to stop the vomiting and diarrhea. We will sometimes recommend giving oral electrolyte supplementation such a Pedialyte at home to prevent dehydration with diarrhea, but if Tinny Bubbles is also vomiting, then she will likely just vomit it up, so she should see her veterinarian. It is possible it is due to intestinal parasites or even the de-worming medication, if he received that on Saturday. Stress can also cause diarrhea, so if he was anxious or stressed about the visit, that could have contributed. I would recommend you take him back to your vet to have his diarrhea evaluated. He may need a temporary diet change, probiotics, and potentially an anti-inflammatory medication for his colon.
