My dog's lipoma burst. What's the best way to care for the open wound?

Pet's info: Dog | American Eskimo Dog | Female | unspayed | 13 years and 6 months old | 15 lbs

Hello my dog, Sock, had a lipoma on her upper belly lower chest area rupture. She is a 13 year old American Eskimo. She's had the lipoma for about 6 months. It never bothered her or put her in pain. She still seems to be fine and isn't in any pain. I cleaned the area with warm water, pat dried it with a paper tower, then sprayed Bactine onto the area. I've been applying gauze pads with Neosporin every few hours and using an ace bandage to seal it all up.

Poor Sock. Everything you've done so far is helping to keep this managed (except no Neopsorin should be placed on a wound that is this open); however she ultimately needs this mass to be removed. It is likely not going to heal very well with wound management. I would recommend taking her in to your vet for oral antibiotics, shaking of the hair around and in top of the mass (hair carries a lot of bacteri) and it needs to be cleaned with an antiseptic (Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water or Chlorhexidine solution 3% diluted). Nothing else topical really should be placed on top of this area. A loose fitting t-shirt should also be placed on Sock and an Elizabethan collar to prevent her from licking the area. Getting her scheduled for surgical removal of the mass may ultimately be the only curative for this wound. Best wishes with Socks wound and getting this resolved. Take care.

Sometimes if the mass is small (less than 2 cm's) we can do a sedative on the pet and quickly remove these. However if it is a larger mass then general anesthesia may be required. She also needs to be placed on oral antibiotics to keep this area from getting infected and daily cleaning of the mass as well. Sterile saline flushes can help keep this area relatively clean and then an e-collar placed on her can help prevent licking. Poor guy. This does not appear to be just a lipoma (fatty tumor). I would highly recommend having Allie seen by your vet to get this tumor surgically removed and sent off for lab analysis to determine if this is a cancerous mass or a benign one. Hopefully it is benign and nothing to be worried about. The vet will likely place Allie on some antibiotics and pet friendly anti-inflammatory medication first to get the skin to calm down before surgical removal is done. But surgery is the best and often-times only option when a mass has gotten this large and has ulcerated. Until you can get her in, its best to clean this mass with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water to keep it from getting infected. Then rinsing with sterile saline from your local pharmacy. an open and infected tumor should be removed. If it happens to be a lipoma (fatty lump) then this should be curative. If it happens to be another type of tumor, then your vet should do an x-ray of the lungs to check whether there are metastases. I think you should get a second opinion from another veterinarian or a veterinary oncologist.

My senior dog's fatty neck cyst opened. Can it heal without surgery?

Potentially it could heal, but keep in mind that the cyst will likely grow back because the cyst sac has not been removed. So this could be a continuing problem when it heals, fills up again, and then opens. While the best thing to do is have it removed, you can hold off to see if it fills up again. Clean the area with warm water and antiseptic soap. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and she will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. I hope this helps!

It is very likely this mass has changed from a lipoma (fatty deposit) to another kind of mass. For now its best to just clean it with Betadine diluted 50:50 with water, and then get your vet to either sample the mass again or go ahead with surgical removal of the mass. My senior dog's leg lump burst open. Is it painful? What should I do?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. What i am seeing in the pictures is likely a sebaceous cyst that ruptured. These are common with older dogs and are benign. When these rupture there is a chance they will become infected so the best treatment is to have it removed to prevent this from happening. Dog's bleeding lump: How to clean? Is triple antibiotic safe?

You shoudl protect it from licking by having him wear an elizabethan collar at all times. You shoudl keep it clean and dry but only wash it if it gets dirty. Do not use hydrogen peroxide. You can apply a dab of organic coconut oil to it twice a day and rub it in well. Just so you know, a histiocytoma is the most likely cause based upon his age but a cancerous Mast Cell tumor can look exactly the same. It typically affects older pets but young pets can get it. When you can, I recommend to have the mass tested. Financing may be an option through Scratch Pay or Care Credit. I hope this helps.
