Dog has a lip rash after beach trip. Could it be a contact allergy?

Poor guy. Yes this does seem to be a localized reaction and it could be to just about anything that has been newly introduced or even something Mork got into that he is having an allergic reaction to. I wouldn’t suspect this is caused by brushing his teeth too hard because this is his lip area that looks irritated. It’s best to visit your vet for some medication to help combat this reaction, especially if this area is bothering him and not improving on its own within a few days. I am sorry to hear about your dog! If this is coming and going I would wonder if there is something he is occasionally getting into that he has an allergy to, such as a plant in your yard. Or perhaps he is getting a special treat/table scrap on the days he breaks out that he has an allergy to. I would recommend bringing him in during a flare up for his vet to examine him as we do worry when we have lesions develop along the edge of the nose about autoimmune disease, so he should be examined to ensure this isn't something that needs to be further investigated.

It does look a little irritated there. That could be caused by irritation from a muzzle or face halter, or could be regular allergies starting up. I would recommend keeping the area clean and dry, for now. If it's not getting better after 3-5 days, I'd recommend a vet visit to see if she needs most medicated wipes. It's common for young dogs to get superficial bacterial infections around their lips, which usually doesn't require oral antibiotics, but may require a topical treatment. I hope that helps! Spots like this can be due to a number of things in cats, including allergies to the environment or food, inflammatory conditions causing ulcers, dental or gum problems (leading to rubbing the spot from pain), growths, infections, and more. If it is rapidly changing size, shape, or appearance, or is bothersome to Moose, it's best to schedule an appointment with your vet. They can take a small sample of the area to test for issues such as infections or growths, examine Moose for any signs of dental problems, and help rule out any allergies with a full exam and/or medications and diet changes. Until you can get into your vet it's a good idea to keep Moose from rubbing or pawing at the spot with an Elizabethan (cone) collar, and to keep the area clean and dry. Keeping note of any sizes or appearance changes can also help your vet narrow down the cause. And, if it's causing any trouble with eating, softening Moose's food with some warm water can help ease any pain until your vet can help.

Hi there. Nova could have an abrasion from rubbing her face on something rough, or could have a mild allergy to something causing the redness. Hello there and thank you for reaching out to Pet Coach. Thank you for the pictures of Sadie. They are perfect for trying to understand what is causing her discomfort on her lip area. His (you listed Sadie as a male, so I will refer to Sadie as him) behavior that you are describing is letting you know that this area is very irritating and uncomfortable to him. Possible reasons for the redness and irritation on his lip area, particularly in his breed mix type are: infection of the lip fold area and/or autoimmune disorder/disease. There may be other areas on Sadie's body that have a similar appearance as well. Sadie should be seen by his veterinarian as soon as you can get him in for an appointment so your vet can closely examine this area, the rest of the mouth and look at other areas on his body to help with a diagnosis. Then, Sadie can be placed on medication right away that will make him feel better and help clear up this area for him. Best of luck with Sadie.

Poor guy! Your can try this: It won’t hurt him if he licks it off. However, if it’s not improving in 5 days or so, I would recommend that you schedule a recheck with your vet. I’m worried he may need antibiotics, as he may have a deep skin infection. If it continues to be a problem , a skin biopsy may be recommended. Thanks for asking PetCoach!
