My dog is limping suddenly with no pain. What home care can I give?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 3 years old | 50 lbs

Hello, my dog started limping out of nowhere. We went for a walk ,came home, she ate, played a bit, everything seemed fine. She went to sleep and now that she woke up - she cannot step on her leg. she doesn't want to stand up and she's mellow. naturally she is very high energy, moves a lot, plays , runs, very happy. She is 3 years old. It's like this since 40 minutes. it doesn't look like she has any pain, nothing in her paw, doesn't wine when I touch. The vet is available in 2 days

Hello. At this point I would ensure that Spirit rests that leg as much as possible. You do not indicate if it is a front or hind leg, but the most common areas to be injured are the wrist & shoulder area of the front leg & the knee or hip area on the hind. I would start using a warming compress concentrating on the shoulder, knee or hip, depending on leg, applying the warmth for 10 minutes 2-3 times a day. I am sure she is uncomfortable, so make sure she is well padded while lying & assist her as best you can. See your vet as soon as possible if she is not improved. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
