My dog is limping after running. Vet or home care for his hip?

If it just started you can let her rest for a few days with minimal walking and minimal physical exercise, if it does not improve within 3-4 days you will have to take her to the vet in order to get it checked and treated, she might need pain killers for a few days. if the vet think it's something more serious such as a fracture, joint injury or foreign body, he might recommend to have an xray done as well.

Unfortunately I would suggest nothing else than complete rest and possibly cold packs applied for 10-15 minutes to decrease inflammation if present. A clinical examination and possibly further investigations would be required to determine more specifically the cause of it. Starve him for eight hours before vet’s check up in case x rays under sedation will be required. Poor Bum-Bucha! While home alone, he could have hurt himself jumping off a bed or couch. It does sound like to me he's very painful, so you have a few options here. In my opinion, the best option is to find a vet on call to see him ASAP or take him into an ER vet. You can rest him tonight, and then take him into the vet first thing in the morning. Or you can rest him for a few days, see if he improves, and then take him into the vet if he doesn't. It's up to you, but as I said, given that he suddenly became lame and doesn't want to move, I think it would be best he was seen by a vet now. At the very least, I would have him seen in the morning. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.

Hello. At this point I would ensure that Spirit rests that leg as much as possible. You do not indicate if it is a front or hind leg, but the most common areas to be injured are the wrist & shoulder area of the front leg & the knee or hip area on the hind. I would start using a warming compress concentrating on the shoulder, knee or hip, depending on leg, applying the warmth for 10 minutes 2-3 times a day. I am sure she is uncomfortable, so make sure she is well padded while lying & assist her as best you can. See your vet as soon as possible if she is not improved. Poor Bruce! That is awful. I recommend resting him for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a leash, and bring him right back in when he's done. If he still appears painful after this time, then I would take him into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. He may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.

If he is acting normal at home when walking around then he might have a sprain or strain that is causing him pain while running. The best thing would be to rest him for a while and then see how his is when you take him running. If he is still reluctant to run or he has any lameness at home when just walking around then he should be examined by a vet to determine the cause and treat. Your vet can take an x-ray to diagnose and then prescribe medications to helps. He may need an anti-inflammatory to treat.
