My dog licks paws after eye medicine. Can he ingest it and get sick?

To treathe feet you apply a small amount to the affected area on her feet and rub it into the skin. This is usually done twice a day, or follow the directions on the label. They are safe medications but they are not made to injest. I recommend using a cone until the lesions are healed so she can’t lick her feet. Dogs don’t like the cone at first but they learn to eat, drink and sleep with it on. The feet will heal much more quickly if you prevent licking. I actually would not recommend putting anything topical on it if he can potentially lick it off. Neosporin is not particularly toxic if a small amount is ingested but it won't have a chance to work if your dog is licking. I'd recommend putting an e-collar on him to keep him from licking. If there is a raw spot or other skin lesion it would be a good idea to have your vet take a look - he might need oral medications for it to resolve. I doubt he would need anesthesia unless there is a skin growth that is there.

The amount of steroid shouldn't be harmful to Sky. Use caution with the chloramphenicol though. It can cause bone marrow suppression in some dogs and aplastic anemia in some people. A safer option would be to use a shirt or recovery wear for pets. A bitter agent, such as Bitter Apple Spray or Fooey!, can be used around the site to deter licking.

If you notice this, try taking away his food for 8 hours, and then start offering small, frequent meals of a bland diet such as boiled chicken and white rice. If Snowy becomes lethargic or disinterested in food, I would recommend taking him to the vet in case he needs further medical attention. In the future, when applying the cream, try to keep Snowy occupied with toys and play for about 10 minutes before letting him lick his skin. Licking off a small amount of neosporin should not harm Theo. If he continues to lick/chew his paws you may want to take him to the vet to be assessed for allergies. Hello. While it is very unlikely that your dog will contract any infectious disease by licking the eyes of the blind dog, I would try & discourage this.
