Is it safe if my dog licks or eats Shea butter applied to their skin?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | unspayed | 1 year old | 30 lbs

I started applying “Shea butter “ on pressure points of both my dogs to avoid them drying up. Dogs lick Shea butter. Is it alright. The product is “ palmers Shea formula” made in USA.

I wouldn’t be concerned if a small amount of Shea butter was ingested. If you find they are licking it off immediately you may want to try applying it shortly before they eat to give it a little time to soak in.
