My dog licked Vaseline from dry paws. Is he sick? What's safe?

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | neutered | 7 months old | 72 lbs

My dogs paws are very dry/cracked from the cold and I tried to put Vaseline on them. He licked a little bit off. Is he going to get sick? Also what should I buy to put of them?

Sawyer may develop a bit of diarrhea and/or vomiting but it should resolve quickly. You can buy protective booties to use on walks or you can use a paw cream such as Musher's Secret. It is a safe cream for pets and works great. You can order it online or buy it at most pet stores.

This can cause some GI upset in Sawyer, and you may see some vomiting or diarrhea. Given that he only licked a little bit, you may not see any, but you should be aware of it. Should he have vomiting or diarrhea, withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet.
As for his dry and cracked feet, you can try Musher's Secret paw protection wax, but put an Ecollar on Sawyer when you use this to keep him from licking at it. You can buy it online or it may be available in pet stores.

Vaseline is safe to use but if you want something more natural then the ResQ skin treatment is all natural and would be fine to use to apply to the paw pads until resolved. If the paw pads begin to look swollen or show any signs of infection (pus, etc.) then I would recommend having Snowball examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. My dog's paws are dry from snow. Can I use Vaseline to soften them?

Vaseline is ok to use in limited amounts. We don’t want him licking and consuming much. If you choose to use it please apply a small amount and then feed him or otherwise entertain him until it soaks in. My dog ate paw wax and vomited. What should I do if she's sick?

This is usually designed to be completely harmless for dogs and the vomiting may be caused by a slight gastrointestinal irritation at this stage. As a first line approach, I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, more vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. What can I use to treat my dog's dry and cracked paw pads at home?

Hello, I am sorry to hear about Paris. To help with her dry and cracked paws I would recommend applying a small amount of Vaseline or similar product. Although this is quite safe, I would recommend trying to prevent Paris from licking at the Vaseline. It will also be helpful to discourage licking in general. It may also be helpful to try and keep Paris away from rough surfaces such as gravel. You could try to purchase protective booties while these injuries heal. If at any point in time you notice a discharge or odor from the paws, please have Paris seen by a veterinarian. Hope this helps, good luck!
