My spayed dog is licking her vulva. When should I take her to the vet?

Her vagina will probably return to normal size in a few months, this typically happens after a dog is spayed. the redness and itching are probably allergy related, this will need to be checked and treated with allergy meds by a vet. Kennel cough in most cases does not require treatment but she is on antibiotics already so no reason to worry, it will resolve soon. regarding the licking of the spay wound, you need to put an e-collar around her neck for 2 weeks post surgery to prevent this from happening.

Poor girl. The brown staining is saliva staining from her licking. THe vulva also looks to be a bit swollen, likely b/c it is irritated. I would suspect that Aira has some vaginitis here. Visit you vet and they can prescribe some antibiotics to hopefully clear this up. Also if she is peeing more than normal and drinking more water, a urinalysis is warranted to check for a UTI. Until you can get her seen, you can wipe her vaginal area with baby wipes to help remove some of the debris and soothe some of the irritation. Bo is likely licking 'down there' either do to a urinary tract infection or allergies which can lead to a skin infection. I would recommend to take her in for urine testing and see what the doctor thinks. Medications will be prescribed to clear up whichever condition is causing the licking.

The question is, is it an vaginal infection or a uterine infection? if she is lethargic, drinking a lot, seems bloated and in pain then it is most likely a pyometra (uterine infection), this will require urgent surgery to have the uterus removed as medical treatment fail to resolve this condition in the vast majority of cases. if she is suffering from a vaginal infection this can be treated with antibiotics prescribed by your vet. either way you will have to take her to a veterinarian ASAP.

Hello, I am sorry to hear about Cinammon. If Cinnamon recently had puppies it is possible that she may have some swelling and irritation secondary to inflammation in that area. Since Cinnamon was also spayed recently, I recommend that she wear an e-collar or something to prevent licking of her incision during the healing process. This will also help prevent her from licking at her vulva. Licking can predispose pets to further irritation and infection. Your post states that your dog is spayed, if she was not spayed we would also be concerned about the chance of a pyometra, or infected uterus, which would need to be seen right away.
