My dog is licking his mouth a lot and has a stuffy nose. Is he sick?

Hi there and thanks for posting. Oh dear I"m sorry to hear Lucky is not feeling well. It sounds like he has a bad upper respiratory infection that may be bacterial, viral, or maybe fungal. He may need a bacterial culture and a chest x-ray to determine what the type of upper respiratory infection he has and that will help determine what best medication to place Lucky on. This is important to do especially if his symptoms are not getting any better. The drinking a lot of water is also concerning. I would recommend blood work on Lucky to check for endocrine disorders and diabetes that could be causing the increased water intake. You are correct that his behavior can signify a problem with his mouth, such as severe dental disease or a broken tooth. There could even be something stuck in his mouth. Another cause is nausea. I'd have him seen by a vet for this, and you should take him into one in the morning. I hope this helps!

There is no way of knowing for sure without an examination though this represents a reason to seek veterinary care. This is usually determined with an examination and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) or a biopsy. Treatment depends on the findings up to that point. Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. The flu you had would not transmit to Ace so you do not need to worry about this. I am concerned that he may be dealing with a systemic illness such as liver disease or kidney disease or an infection. I would recommend having a veterinarian examine him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I would initiate a bland diet of chicken and rice and also add in a probiotic such as Purina fortiflora which can be found online quite easily. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Drooling and dry heaving are both signs of nausea in dogs. It sounds as Ace is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an anti nausea injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better.

The quivering could be a sign that he is running a fever. Being a dachshund, I would also be concerned that he has injured his back as we see a lot on Intervertebral Disc Disease in this breed. If you have the ability to have Ace evaluated by your veterinarian, a diagnosis can be made & he proper treatment started to get Ace feeling better as soon as possible. I hope all is well soon. It could be Misha is feeling a bit nauseous. I'd keep an eye on her tonight. If this behavior continues tomorrow, she starts vomiting, has diarrhea, has a loss of appetite, or is lethargic, take her into the closest vet to you.
