My dog won't stop crying after intestinal surgery. What to do?

His discomfort may not be related to his previous surgery, but occasionally there can be failure of the internal sutures. It's also possible that he has an anal gland issue, or something like intestinal parasites. I would recommend having Scampi examined by your veterinarian if he continues this behavior so they can check the hernia sites internally and also check his anal glands.

Poor Bayley. She just need a bit of time to settle down, follow your vet instruction reading meds and she will be better soon. I would wait till this afternoon and if she continues to be unsettled, not eating and lethargic I would have her re-checked. Given that Stanley was recently neutered and had abdominal surgery to find the undescended testicle, he may be a little painful still and that's causing him to cry out in pain when pooping. It could be as well that if he is on pain medication, it is making him a little constipated, and you can try adding a tablespoon of canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) in with his food to see if that helps. If this doesn't help, and he's still crying when pooping after 24-48 hours, then I would take him into the vet for an exam.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The best way to determine if crying is wanting out vs. pain is to go get her out and bring her for a very short/controlled walk. If she is happy, exploring, moving well, and doesn't cry when you put gentle pressure on the areas of her surgery, then it is likely that she is just wanting out. Also, if she is eating/pooping/peeing well this is a good sign. Signs of pain including not wanting to move, crying when you touch the surgery site, not eating, shaking/trembling, growling/crying/biting when you go to touch her abdomen, not wanting to walk/explore, not looking happy when you go see her. If you are still unsure you can bring her to a vet to assess if she is painful or not. Best of luck with Gizmo.

This sounds like he has bad back or hip pain. He needs veterinary attention right away. They will prescribe pain medication and may do X-rays to determine if he has hip or spinal arthritis. With treatment he should improve if he was fine before. Sometimes back or arthritis pain is worse after a lot of activity, or from being confined and not being able to move around. He should be rechecked by your vet or at the local veterinary ER today. He may be painful or still feeling the aftereffects of general anesthesia. This can last as long as 72 hours. If his bladder is full, the doctors can insert a urinary catheter if necessary to empty it. Medications can be administered or dispensed to alleviate pain which may make him comfortable. Supportive care can also be administered. SQ fluids may rehydrate him and perk him up.

She is likely in pain, and that my be one way of her trying to alleviate the pain. If your veterinarian gave you pain medicine for her, please administer as prescribed. This was a big abdominal surgery and therefore it will take a few days for her to settle. You may want to to take her bed to a quiet dark room where she can calm down and sleep, and sort of leave her be. Tomorrow morning she should be less prone to scoot. Should this not stop by tomorrow morning, then take her back to the vet for a recheck. If your vet has not prescribed any pain medication, ring him and ask for them.
