Why is my dog licking a pink line on her belly? What should I do?

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 1 year and 8 months old

My 18mnth old lab has a pink/white line about 0.5cm wide and 3-4cm long on her belly. The surrounding skin in normally dark. She keeps licking it. What should I do?

Can you post a picture? It is hard to tell with out an exam or a picture. I would use a T-shirt or an E-collar o donut to prevent licking and apply a topical antibiotic twice daily. Of the area isn't improved in a few days have her seen by your Vet. Please feel free to repost with a picture.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Judging from the picture, it appears as though this is an area of irritation. It does not seem infected to me. I would recommend buying a plastic cone to put around her neck to prevent her from licking at this area. I would also recommend using a topical steroid spray which you should be able to find online or at your local pet store. If this worsens, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. My dog has sores and scabs on his belly from licking. What is it?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Unfortunately, without pictures, it is very hard to guess. Some possibilities include: urine scald (basically an extreme diaper rash), skin infection, allergies/hot spots, tick/flea bites, insect bite hypersensitivity, and more. If it looks serious (painful, infected, or very itchy), he should see a vet right away to get on medication to control itching or infection. If it looks only mildly uncomfortable, try an E-collar to prevent licking. Keep him from lying in his urine/feces and keep him clean and dry as much as possible. If it is a urine scald, it should improve dramatically in a few days with just this. Best wishes to you and your new buddy Jackson!

Based on your description I'm thinking Bella may have a hot spot (superficial skin infection) or either a yeast or bacterial skin infection. It likely would be uncomfortable when touched. Maybe posting a picture may make it more clear. But I think seeing your Veterinarian. If it is a hot spot or skin infection then they would like prescribe antibiotics, topical and maybe steroids. My puppy has brown spots on her belly and licks it. Is it normal?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Based on your picture, the brown spots are normal freckling. I can't tell if there are 2 red bumps with yellow discharge. If there are that could be a skin infection. Skin infections can cause her to lick the area or scratch. We treat with oral antibiotics. If there aren't any red bumps there then I think her belly is normal. Have a great day!

Dog has a red/yellow sore on side, keeps licking. Is it serious?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Tilly! It looks like a scrape that is trying to heal. I think ultimately she will be fine but she needs to stop licking. I would put on an E-collar to prevent licking for the next 5-7 days and apply a triple antibiotic ointment on the area twice daily. Once it is healed you can take the E-collar off. Most likely Pixie will need a course of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory agents to fully recover. Please, make sure she is not licking or scratching the area as by doing that she will likely make things worse.
