My dog suddenly licks our newborn after avoiding. Is this okay?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed | 7 lbs

Since coming home with our newborn our dog has kept her distance. And all of a sudden today she starts getting right up on him and licking his legs and arms. Is this behavior ok.?

Hi there and congratulations on your new baby! How exciting.

It can be normal for a dog who was otherwise the center of attention before the baby arrived to be a little confused and perhaps uncertain of the new member of the family. Suddenly there is something new in the house that cries and makes strange noises! This can be unsettling for a dog who has never encountered a new born or a baby before. The good news is, she will get use to it and adapt. It sounds like she already is as evident with the licks on the arms and legs. Licking can be a sign of affection or an indication Lola wants to be friends with your new baby.

Over time, this Behavior will likely resolve or greatly reduce. you can try and apply bitter apple to the areas where Preston likes to lick and see if this helps deter her from doing this behavior. You can also use a spray bottle filled with water and lightly Spritz Preston in the face whenever she licks you and say “off!” while spraying her. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. My dog has a licking and biting problem. Should I be worried?

I would be concerned though if he is causing himself any skin lesions or wounds from the licking which in that case it could be from allergies and should be addressed.
