Why is my dog licking lips, drooling, eating grass, and throwing up?

Excessive salivary production and licking of the lips sounds like some pretty significant nausea too me. Daisy would likely benefit from some anti-nausea medication. The best drugs for this include Cerenia and metoclopramide, both of which will require a prescription from your vet. Over the counter options which do not tend to work as effectively include things like pepsid and prilosec. I would encourage you to take Daisy in to be examined to see if there is an underlying problem that can be determined. Common causes of nausea in dogs include gastroenteritis, pancreatitis, vertigo / neurologic diseases, inner ear infections, GI foreign bodies, and several different infectious diseases. I am so sorry to hear about Maddie! It definitely sounds like she is battling nausea in the evenings. Dogs often eat grass to try to settle their stomach. The question is why? Have you changed foods? Have you started going to the dog park after dinner? Is she nauseous at any other time of day? Losing weight? Pregnant? Getting into the trash/cat litter every afternoon? Because so many things can cause nausea, I would highly recommend you see your vet as soon as possible. He or she will ask many more questions, do a good physical exam and potentially recommend x-rays and/or bloodwork to help determine what is going on. In the meantime, I would not recommend peroxide as this is actually damaging to the gut lining and I try to avoid it except in emergencies. Rice and sweet potato won’t hurt but they are unlikely to stop vomiting. When Maddie seems nauseous, pick up the food and water. Reintroduce water 4 hours after any vomiting or after she seems comfortable again. Reintroduce a small meal 13 hours after any vomiting. Hope this helps and best of luck to you and Maddie!

Licking the lips can sometimes be a sign of nervousness, nausea, or even an issue with the teeth or mouth. If he hasn't had a dental cleaning recently, tartar on the teeth or gums could be causing some irritation and thus the licking behavior. Nausea such as from minor GI upset, may also cause drooling, or have signs such as vomiting or diarrhea, but this is not always the case. If it continues or you see any signs of illness/smell bad breath, etc, having your vet take a look is best. If you've changed something in his environment around the time the licking started (new pet, people, items in the house, etc) it could be that he's feeling a bit nervous or uncomfortable as well. Making sure he gets some extra attention and the cause of the nervousness is addressed (IE making sure he has someplace to go rest and hide, using a pheromone diffuser, etc) may help.

It's hard to say. Some dogs will eat grass or leaves because their stomach hurts, as it often induces vomiting. Some dogs just like to eat these things and it doesn't cause any harm. I think it is worth discussing with your vet, especially if this is happening more than just occasionally.

It could be Rey is feeling a bit nauseous. Try feeding her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If this doesn't help her symptoms, she starts vomiting, refuses to eat the diet, vomits water or stops drinking water, develops diarrhea, or becomes very lethargic, take her into a vet immediately. When dogs eat grass it is usually from nausea/upset stomach. It is only a symptom, not a disease in of itself so I cannot tell you exactly what is wrong with her. If she is that bloated you really should get her to a vet ASAP - she could be actually having the condition "bloat" which can be fatal. The licking and panting are from nausea and pain. Please get her to a vet.

Hello. I am sorry that Zeus isn't feeling well. Hard swallowing/licking can be a sign of nausea and an upset stomach. Eating grass and fur is also a sign of an upset stomach. It is not surprising that he did this on a raw food diet (especially if there were bones) as this often causes gastritis. Now that he is on a kibble he is likely feeling much better most of the time. If he is having another episode now, it could be that he is having a bit of gastritis again. It is firstly important to make sure he doesn't have something stuck in his esophagus, this can be done with an x-ray. Alternatively, at home you can feed him some boiled boneless chicken, and see if he will eat it and not vomit or regurgitate it back up. As a general rule, if they eat food and it stays down for an hour it is unlikely to have an esophageal blockage. If you feed some food and Zeus either regurgitates/vomits/or does not want to eat the treat, I would recommend a visit to the vet. If Zeus is eating, and not vomiting, and is otherwise bright and happy, a simple gastritis can usually be treated at home with boiled boneless/skinless/chicken breasts, and boiled rice, in small frequent meals for 2 days, and then re-introduce his kibble slowly. At any time if there is vomiting, lethargy, abdominal pain, or inappetance, I would recommend a visit to the vet ASAP for radiographs, possible bloodwork, and possible hospitalization and treatment depending on what they find.
