My dog licked rain water. Is it safe? What should I watch for?

If he did lick something on the ground, it would depend on what he consumed and how much was actually ingested. There is a bacterial infection that is spread through the urine of wildlife, livestock and infected dogs. It is known as leptospirosis. Most dogs are vaccinated for this disease if it is prevalent in your area. If he shows any signs of illness, he will need to be seen by a veterinarian. It is a good sign that he is still acting fine. Because we do not know what the other animal was vomiting it is always possible that they could become ill (for example if the other animal had ingested a toxin or had a virus). That being said, there isn't really anything you can do right now for your dog other than monitor him closely. If he begins acting lethargic/weak, has vomiting or diarrhea or anorexia, or begins having trembling/muscle tremors or acting drunk/ataxic, then I would recommend seeking veterinary care. Luckily most of the time, however, dogs do not get ill in a situation such as this.

The behavior itself is not normal and could indicate several things. First, if she is only licking the moisture or water, then you may not be providing her with the amount of water she needs. Make sure her water bowl is filled and that she gets water as often as she needs it. This may improve her ability to go to the bathroom and reduce her thirst and licking when outdoors. Other less likely causes for this include that Harlie has a dietary deficiency. These are far less common in pets that are eating commercial brand dog foods as these diets have to meet minimum essential ingredient requirements. Finally, the most common cause for this is an acquired aberrant behavior. This could be elicited from the lack of environmental enrichments (toys, play time, walks, etc.). It may just be that the water from the grass tastes good to her. If she continues to lick this despite having a good enrichment at home, then she may benefit from wearing a grazing or basket muzzle and discourage this behavior. Hope his helps and best of luck.

Most likely Stella will be ok. There are some bacteria associated with water such as Leptospirosis. If she has any vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, weakness or pain Stella should get examined by her veterinarian.
