My dog licked something while peeing. What signs of illness should I watch for?

However, if he only sniffed the rain water or licked a small amount, then it would be unlikely that he would be affected. This is especially true if he is still acting normally. Because we do not know what the other animal was vomiting it is always possible that they could become ill (for example if the other animal had ingested a toxin or had a virus). That being said, there isn't really anything you can do right now for your dog other than monitor him closely. If he begins acting lethargic/weak, has vomiting or diarrhea or anorexia, or begins having trembling/muscle tremors or acting drunk/ataxic, then I would recommend seeking veterinary care. Luckily most of the time, however, dogs do not get ill in a situation such as this.

I would watch Joshie for anything abnormal, such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, abdominal pain, panting, etc. It may be no big deal, but if she does develop symptoms she should see a vet for treatment.

This is a tricky situation and could have several possibilities. Monitor Hannah's drinking and urination volumes closely. If they have increased, consider having her examined and evaluated for diabetes mellitus, as would cause glucose (sugar) to spill into her urine, making it sweet and possibly more palatable for Remington. Otherwise, if Remington has been licking Hannah's urine and other items obsessively, this could be a sign of nausea (although this seems like a stretch). This is unusual behavior and I think that the best course of action would be to start by taking Hannah to her vet for a urinalysis to determine if there is glucose in her urine, crystals or signs of infection that may be tempting to Remington.

There is no way to know for whether or not the bird Rocky licked was carrying any sort of pathogen, and whether or not that pathogen is transmissible to dogs. I would operate under the assumption that everything is going to be OK unless you begin to see any clinical signs of illness. You can certainly obtain a fecal sample and bring it into your vet to make sure he didn't pick up any intestinal parasites. Hope this helps.

If you are worried she ingested an object, like a sock or shoe then you would watch for signs of gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting, anorexia, abdominal pain, lethargy, or straining to defecate. If you are worried about a toxin ingestion these signs can vary widely and can include GI upset, rapid breathing or heart rate, excessive drooling, trembling, seizures, drunken appearance/gait, dilated pupils, pale gums, lethargy. If any of these signs occur seek veterinary care right away.

You are correct that the rat can carry diseases. I recommend to call your veterinarian and tell them what happened. They may want to check him for any bites and booster his vaccines. The main concerns for rats are Leptospirosis and fleas who can carry plague depending on where you live. Theoretically, rabies and rat poison ingestion would also be a risk.
