Why is my dog suddenly lethargic and struggling to jump on furniture?

Based on the information provided, I'm not sure how old AJ is, or how long this has been going on, but it looks like she is not spayed. This sort of change in behavior can be due to a variety of things. Arthritis and pain can decrease a dog's activity level, as can problems with the heart or lungs. Any time I have an unspayed female with decreased activity level, pyometra (infection of the uterus) also has to be a concern. A check up with your veterinarian to look for a fever or signs of pain is a good place to start. If they find abnormalities, checking bloodwork to look for signs of infection or organ dysfunction would be the next step. I hope AJ is feeling better soon.

Plus age changes are gradual. Not as dramatic as you have described. I recommend that she sees a veterinarian. I worry that she is painful somewhere. For example, neck and/or back pain is common in small and medium breed dogs. Arthritis or a soft tissue injury could also explain the signs you are seeing. The veterinarian will carefully examine her. X-rays may be recommended. Based on these results, treatment can be started to help her feel better. In the meantime, keep her quiet and do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!

It sounds as she might be suffering from a back problem, probably a slipped disk in her spine which is common for the breed. you will need to take her to the vet, she will need pain killers for a couple weeks and will need to be in cage rest as well for this time.

Poor Chloe! It sounds like she may be painful somewhere. I often see dogs with back or neck pain that act this way, because doing stairs or jumping is painful for them. It's also possible that she may have injured herself somehow, or has some type of orthopedic problem that makes these activities uncomfortable. I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam. He/she may be able to determine what the problem is by palpating her neck, back, and legs, and may also recommend x-rays or other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem.

Ammu definitely sounds like she might be in pain on some part of her body. While you might not be able to appreciate any pain on palpation of her legs and hips at home, a more well-trained set of hands might be able to isolate a small area that could be injured. Even if you have not seen a traumatic event occur, it is still quite possible that a young Beagle could have somehow caused herself an injury while romping around. Other causes of difficultly rising or getting around could be a systemic infection, neurologic problem, or inflammatory condition. Any of these would require a diagnostic work up by a veterinarian to determine what therapies should be instituted.

This can be caused by arthritis - pretty much any joint can be affected as well as the spine. Your vet can perform a thorough orthopedic exam and x-rays to isolate the signs to a particular part of the body. Certain conditions such as Lyme disease and autoimmune disease also cause generalized joint pain and can be ruled out with bloodwork.
