Why is my 7-year-old dog suddenly lethargic but eating normally?

Pet's info: Dog | Puggle | Female | spayed | 6 years and 11 months old | 35 lbs

My dog is lethargic and moving slowly, when she is normally nonstop high energy. However, she is eating, drinking, and potty-ing normally. Should I be concerned or did she just get old overnight? She will be 7 this month.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Moxie. I think that her sudden change in behavior is worrisome. Dogs can slow down as they age. However, she is only middle aged. Plus age changes are gradual. Not as dramatic as you have described. I recommend that she sees a veterinarian. I worry that she is painful somewhere. For example, neck and/or back pain is common in small and medium breed dogs. Arthritis or a soft tissue injury could also explain the signs you are seeing. The veterinarian will carefully examine her. X-rays may be recommended. Based on these results, treatment can be started to help her feel better. In the meantime, keep her quiet and do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!

Differentials are many, from any disease that can spread systemically (causing lethargy for example) like infection, and anything that can cause pain/discomfort. The approach must be logic, A check up is needed if signs last for more than 24hours. Dog shaking, lethargic, and won't be pet. What could be wrong?

Hello there. It sounds like Mochi may be painful. This could be due to back injury or sprain/strain of legs. However, other issues that could make Mochi act abnormally are neurologic disease or infection. I recommend taking him to the veterinarian so he can get a full examine to determine why he is acting abnormally. Your veterinarian may want to do bloodwork and/or x-rays to help make a diagnosis.

Why is my 9-year-old Golden Retriever not eating and lethargic?

Poor Mazy! It definitely sounds like something isn't right. There are many different things that could cause decreased appetite and lethargy, so it's hard to say what might be wrong without being able to examine her and run some tests. She could have anything from liver or kidney disease, to heart disease, arthritis pain, a GI problem of some kind, or even some type of cancer. I would recommend taking Mazy to the vet for an exam when you are able to. He/she can do blood work and x-rays if needed to help diagnose the problem and get her started on appropriate treatment depending on what is found.

An arthritis flare up, sore back, or soft tissue injury can be very difficult to find on an exam but can cause exactly what you are describing. Hello. In an older dog, lethargy can be due to infection, inflammation, arthritis, immune dysfunction or even cancer.
