My dog is lethargic with red discharge. Should I wait for the vet?

I would ask for full blood work, urinalysis, and belly X-rays. Maybe collect a urine sample to bring with you. I would consider also checking his clotting times. He could have a UTI, bladder stones, crystals in his urine, immune mediate destruction of his red blood cells or platelets. Yes, I would be concerned about Guapo in that this redness and discharge can indicate an infection. From the pictures, it look like the discharge could be pus. He could have an infection of the prepuce (the penile sheath), or he could have a UTI or bladder stones causing these symptoms. I would gently wipe the area with warm water on a soft cloth, and have him seen by a vet. The vet can examine him and diagnose what is causing this redness and discharge so he can be treated. Taking him into a vet today would be best if possible. When dogs have infections, they can lick the area because it's uncomfortable to them, but licking it will make it worse. I would put an Ecollar on him if you notice him licking his penis area. You can make one at home or you can buy one at a pet shop. Poor guy. He needs to be seen by a vet right away. HE could have an infection here causing the redness and lethargy and this needs to be investigated first with some baseline bloodwork/urinalysis and then treated appropriately through your veterinarian. Your pet needs to be seen by a vet right away. Even with no other symptoms, extreme lethargy is very concerning. Your dog may have eaten something that disagreed with her, swallowed something that has caused an obstruction, has parasites, is coming down with some kind of infection, there are a number of possibilities. Your vet will do an exam and labwork to determine the cause of your pets symptoms and give you some treatment options based on those results.

The yellow discharge you are seeing from Scrappy's penis may be smegma. It actually comes from the penile sheath and is normal. Because it's super hot where you live, I would not be surprised that it would make him a little more lethargic than usual. He may be wanting to pee more because he's drinking more due to the heat. In addition, with it being very hot, that would make him slower to eat. I would keep an eye on him for now. Make sure he always has access to cool water, and keep him in a dark cool room so he doesn't overheat. If he becomes more lethargic, stops eating, you see an excess amount of discharge from his penis, and/or his bathroom habits change, then I would take him into the vet for an exam.
