Dog not eating, hot, and lethargic after groomer visit. Is he okay?

This lethargy and loss of appetite are both signs of illness include dental problems, systemic illness, infection, or injury. Try offering him some boiled white meat chicken (no bones or skin) and white rice. If he refuses to eat this, have him seen by a vet.

Hello, and thank you for your question. It is concerning that his lethargy has been persisting for so long. It is difficult to say what this could be, but some dogs are hardy enough that the only symptom they may show of being ill is lethargy. I would certainly recommend having him checked out by a vet to be sure we are not missing a medical issue. They can perform a full physical exam to check for any areas of pain or infection, and may recommend additional blood tests or x-rays depending on what is found on the physical exam. For example, some problems I commonly see after grooming visits are skin or ear infections. If this is detected by the vet, they can recommend medications to help clear the issue. If he physically checks out fine, it is possible this may be a purely behavioural issue, in which case the vet can also provide advice on how to help as well. Poor Rylee. I'm concerned she has a stomach illness causing her to vomit and not eat. I can give you a home remedy for her to see if that helps. Feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If she refuses to eat the bland diet, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Poor Oscar! How scary for you to lose him for three days, but I'm glad he came back home. He could have eaten something on his adventure that has made him ill, or he could have been injured by another animal. I would keep him quiet tonight, and offer him small amounts of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts. Have him seen by a vet first thing in the morning for a health check.

You can keep him on a bland diet such as the boiled chicken and white rice, cottage cheese, or just plain white rice. I would wait for the blood test results before trying any other diet and or treatments. His signs could be due to an infection, parasites, kidney and/or liver issues, pancreatitis, and rarely endocrine disease.

If he keeps this up for more than 12 hrs, then I would get concerned and recommend taking him in to your vet for a thorough exam. His nicked toe may be the source of the pain. If he is painful, then your vet can prescribed pet friendly pain medication for him to hopefully subside his anxiety. In the meantime you can do a thorough examination yourself at home, to see you can locate any bleeding areas or trauma to his skin. You can also just give him a warm water Epsom salt bath to help ease any tenderness he may be having.
