Why is my 1-year-old dog suddenly sleepy and not eating much?

Poor Lyl. There are so many things that can cause not eating and lethargy so it is hard to say for sure what is going on. I would make sure her gums are pink - if they are white, yellow or grayish blue then she is in critical condition and needs to go to the emergency clinic. Otherwise, you can try feeding her some plain boiled chicken (no bones) and white rice tonight and see if she will eat it. If not, then I would have your vet take a look at her. Your vet will be able to determine if she is in pain anywhere or if something else is going on. They will be able to do bloodwork and even X-rays if needed. Poor Patch! It sounds like he has a couple of things going on at the moment. He may not be eating because he has dental problems, a systemic illness, infection, inflammation, or injury. He could be moving slowly because he's injured or is suffering from a musculoskeletal problem such as arthritis. I would have him rest today, and offer him some boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. Should he refuse to eat this diet and/or he's still moving very slowly in the morning, have him seen by a vet for a health check.

I'm sorry Moose doesn't seem well! Lethargy is a very general sign of illness in dogs, and can be caused by many things including systemic illness, inflammation, infection, or injury. Given that he has eaten this morning and the symptoms just started, I would keep an eye on him for the next 48-72 hours. Should the lethargy continue over this time period, or he develops other signs such as anorexia, vomiting, and/or diarrhea, I would take Moose into the vet for a health check.

Any signs of lethargy, decreased appetite, and acting abnormal, especially in a younger dog, warrant a visit to the veterinarian. A 2 year old Lab should have lots of energy and a good appetite if they are healthy. It is possible that he is systemically sick, either with gastrointestinal disease, liver or kidney disease, or other metabolic issue causing him to feel unwell. He may also be painful somewhere, causing him to not want to eat and walk slowly. I recommend contacting your veterinarian to have him seen at the next available appointment. Your vet will likely recommend bloodwork to look for any evidence of infection or organ abnormalities that can be treated. Do NOT give any pain medications that are intended for humans to Brak n Jan, as these can be fatally toxic to dogs. I hope this is helpful!

Given the lack of clinical signs besides lethargy and inappetence, there is not much else to go on here. I would consider obtaining a rectal thermometer tomorow and checking for a fever (above 102.5), which might suggest the presence of an infection or inflammation. If you detect a fever, I would definitely suggest getting Rusty to the vet sometime soon. If there is no fever, but his condition does not get better by Monday he should be taken in for an examination regardless. You can certainly try and feed Rusty something that would normally be considering irresistible just to see if he will accept it, rather than just his normal dog food. Anyway, hope this helps and that Rusty is feeling better soon. It is entirely possible that he might just feeling a little under the weather or maybe could have eaten something he shouldn't have that upset his stomach. If this is the case, the symptoms should pass with short time.

There are a wide variety of possible causes for anorexia and lethargy in a young dog, including dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, bacterial or viral infection (especially parvo virus in improperly vaccinated dogs), intestinal blockage, colitis, among others. I would recommend trying to schedule an appointment at a vet in a different area, as this really shouldn't wait for another week.

Lethargy and a loss of appetite are both signs of illness that can include dental disease, systemic illness, infection, or injury. Without seeing her in person, I can't narrow it down.
