Why is my 3-year-old pit bull lethargic, hacking, and acting strange?

Great question! I would take him into the Humane Society to have his incision examined. Call first to make sure the vet is available. While some irritation can be normal, it's not normal for him to feel warm and be more lethargic than usual. Drooling excessively isn't normal either, than could be due to nausea. I wouldn't expect to see these signs a week after being neutered, so a check with the vet is best. I hope this help!

With any stray dog you want to make sure he is at least examined by a vet to determine if there are major health concerns here or if he is just going to take some time to recover slowly with good care and nutrition. I would highly recommend taking Zeus to your vet for an overall health assessment. You should also consider getting his stool checked for any intestinal parasites to start. Its best to feed him three times a day, a puppy food either dry or wet for now. Check his rectal temperature to ensure it is ideal (100.0- 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit) and continue providing a heat source (blanket, etc) for him if he is in fact below his ideal temperature. Loss of appetite can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. Poor Zeus! It sounds like he should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. He could have an infections, parasite, metabolic/endocrine disease, musculoskeletal pain, etc. and your vet can run lab-work and take x-rays, if needed, to help diagnose and then determine the best way to treat his problem. Please call your vet and have him seen as soon as possible.

This may be present due to something affecting his gastrointestinal system and/or his respiratory system for example.
