My dog is tired, not eating, breathing fast 2 weeks post neuter. Normal?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! He is adorable! It is not necessarily uncommon for a dog to not want to eat for 1-2 days when adjusting to a new environment. However, that should improve quickly. If he is otherwise fine with a normal activity level, you can continue to monitor for the next 24 hours. If no improvement, have him evaluated by your veterinarian. It could be that he is painful following his surgery. Theoretically, yes, there are things that can be transmitted to your other dogs. Poor pup! If he's vomiting, not eating, and isn't able to keep anything down, this is very concerning - so I would recommend taking him back in to your veterinarian today to be seen. It's possible that this could be some type of complication related to his neuter surgery, or could be a totally separate problem. Your veterinarian can examine him and may recommend blood work, x-rays, or other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem and see what kind of treatment is needed.

Thank you for posting this question! Males are typically feeling pretty good and eating within 12 hours or so if being home ( i.e. the next morning). They may be sore for a few days (hopefully he was sent home with pain medications), but are typically wanting to be more active then we want them to be by day 3 or 4. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Buster, it can be exhausting on surgery day. It can be considered a "normal" occurrence for pets to be tired the day of surgery due to the anesthesia and analgesics (pain control medications) administered for the surgery itself. On occasion they may also experience some mild vomiting (i.e. once following a car ride, after eating supper/drinking water). Buster should want to sleep tonight and we do not want him running around/playing until the surgery site is healed (minimum 2 weeks). If he is too mobile/active this could result in hemorrhaging at the surgery site or failure of the incision. If he continues to vomit, seems painful/agitated, or excessively tired/lethargic then he should be evaluated by his veterinarian or an emergency veterinarian. I instruct my clients to always monitor there mucous membrane (oral gum) color at home the night following surgery to make sure it stays pink (normal color).

While being a little groggy and sore post-surgery is normal, what you are describing may be due to trauma from intubation (or keeping the airway open during surgery). I recommend having Winston seen by a vet as soon as possible to determine what is going on. However, if you believe that Winston is having trouble breathing (gasping for air, gums turning blue) he should be seen by a vet immediately.

It isn't likely to have caused whatever is causing the symptoms. It is likely he had a pre-existing condition that may have been aggravated by the anesthesia. Many of these drugs are filtered by the liver and kidneys. Blood work is a start. Submit a stool sample to diagnose intestinal parasites, bacterial overgrowth or malabsorption/maldigestion issues. Whatever the underlying cause, supportive care is likely indicated. Discuss a feeding tube and parenteral nutrition (IV nutritional support) with your veterinarian.

Great question! I would take him into the Humane Society to have his incision examined. Call first to make sure the vet is available. While some irritation can be normal, it's not normal for him to feel warm and be more lethargic than usual. Drooling excessively isn't normal either, than could be due to nausea. I wouldn't expect to see these signs a week after being neutered, so a check with the vet is best. I hope this help!
