My dog is lethargic after Baytril for anal gland infection. Is this normal?

Poor Cassie, it's likely that she's feeling unwell as these anal gland infections can be pretty painful and also cause a fever. Although Enrofloxacin is a powerful antibiotic, she may benefit from pain relief and anti inflammatory medicine to help her recovery. Also, if its not been done already, emptying and flushing the infected gland will resolve the infection much faster than medicine alone will. There are some side effects to antibiotics, she may be experiencing those. I strongly recommend returning her to your vet as soon as you can for them to determine what extra treatment she may need. As always, do not give any human medicines unless under direct guidance from your vet.

Yes, lethargy can be a side effect of Clavamox, and it could also be a side effect of Higdon from feeling so ill from bronchitis. He should start feeling better in a couple of days from the antibiotic, so if he is still lethargic in another 72 hours, I would take him back into the vet for an exam.

There is a range for the dose of Baytril depending on what we are treating with the antibiotic. C is on the high end of the dosage range which does sometimes make it more likely that we will see side effects commonly associated with antibiotics (including vomiting). I would contact your veterinarian to advise them about C's vomiting and ask for their recommendation. They may adjust his dose, change his antibiotic, or recommend an anti-nausea medication. She may be lethargic due to pain. I suggest you call your vet to see if you can get a different pain medication. I have eye problems and I can tell you it is miserable and very painful and you don't feel like doing much. I'm guessing that may be going on with her. I'm glad the eye is looking better though!

It’s might have been a bit painful to have them expressed, and then you add on the excitement and stress of a vet visit. All of those combined could lead her to be tired and lethargic. I would keep an eye on her for now, and if she is still acting this way in another 48 hours, I would be concerned she may have an illness causing these symptoms. The only instance where that medication could result in such side effects is if for example it is causing like gastrointestinal ulceration and anemia. In that case you may notice black tarry stools and his gums may look pale. If that is the case, I recommend that you have him evaluated as soon as possible as that may represent a medical emergency. Otherwise, severe lethargy can be observed with a variety of conditions going from anemia to pain/discomfort. I recommend that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian soon as that degree of lethargy is not expected from that medication and is likely something else going on. Good luck!

Lethargy is a very general sign of illness in dogs, and can be caused by systemic illness, infection, inflammation, or injury. Lethargy isn't a side effect of Frontline, so I'm suspecting that it may be to to a medical illness. As long as Scout is eating and drinking normally as well as going to the bathroom normally, I would keep an eye on her for now. Should she still be lethargic in 48 hours, then I would be concerned and take her into the vet for an exam. If she stops eating and drinking, and develops other signs such as vomiting or diarrhea, then I would take her into a vet right away. I hope this helps!
