Is it normal for my dog not to walk 3 weeks after FHO surgery?

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Male | neutered | 8 years and 3 months old | 11 lbs

MY 9 year old Pomeranian had FHO surgery 3 weeks ago and is still not walking on his surgery leg. He uses the leg in the pool and I stretch his leg for him at home 30 minutes twice a day. I am worried he will never use his surgery leg again because it looks like he is already losing muscle. Am I worrying too much?

According to the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (www.acvsorg), results after FHO vary and are highly dependent upon patient size and proper postoperative physical rehabilitation. While many dogs will have varying degrees of lameness, function should improve when compared with preoperative status. After FHO, pets are encouraged to use the limb as soon as possible in a controlled manner. Aggressive physical rehabilitation and controlled exercise to increase hip range of motion are essential for an optimal outcome. It may take up to six weeks or longer after surgery for some dogs to show improvement.

I'm sorry to hear that Charlie is recovering so slowly from his surgery. Recovery after an FHO surgery can be fairly intensive and I'm glad to hear that he is allowing you to perform his passive range of motion exercises. I know that some orthopedic surgeons become a bit more concerned if the surgical limb is not being used 10-14 days after an FHO. It is encouraging that Charlie is using his leg in the pool and if this is with a veterinary rehabilitation specialist, consider asking them about other exercises that can be performed to encourage use of the leg. If Charlie is using the pool at home without any rehab oversight, consider looking for a veterinary rehabilitation specialist or orthopedic surgeon in your area that can assess Charlie's current healing and also develop a more comprehensive rehabilitation plan for him.
It's hard not to worry about our four legged friends - your concerns are completely justified! :-)

Is my puppy's limping normal 3 weeks after leg fracture surgery?

Poor girl. : ( It sounds like she is tweaking it a bit when she tries to do extrenuous exercise, which is expected, especially since she still has hardware in place in the leg. Her muscles also can grow tired quicker and become inflamed, which can cause some limping after increased movement. This sounds pretty normal at this stage in the healing process. However, if you are noticing any excessive swelling around the area, drainage or signs of infection, then she should be seen by your vet. Otherwise, follow-up your vet as scheduled to check on things and hopefully the leg is healing well via the post surgery x-rays that they will take. I hope that Olly's leg heals well. My dog's FHO incision is infected. Will it heal? What's the popping?

Yes it will heal if you keep the area clean. Gradually over a week or so the skin edges will get closer together and finally heal over. The popping noise may be the movement in the hip area since there hasn’t been time yet for a false joint to form. Over time the hip area will form scar tissue to support the femur in the hip area. If you’re concerned I certainly would take her back for a recheck to make sure there isn’t a problem with she surgical implants. Once the pelvis is healed and you are able to increase her exercise I recommend an evaluation and treatment program with a Rehabilitation veterinarian to get her leg back to as normal as possible. Is it normal for my dog to not use his leg long after patella surgery?

Poor Saif! Good mobility and function would normally be expected by 4-6weeks after surgery. I recommend a full check up by the operating vet and possibly recommendations for or referral to physical therapy to try and rebuild strength as long as no focus of pain or breakdown is discovered during his check up

My senior dog's leg injury: Is her walking progress a good sign?

Neurologic issues can take time. It is great that she is up and bearing weight on her own, dogs are so amazing. Hopefully she had xrays to look for a spinal/pelvic fracture, collapsed disc space, etc. as these would be important to rule out as well. You will need to give her potentially even months to know what her new normal with be. Hopefully she will at some point be deficit free or only have a mild deficit but it is too soon to tell. Keep working with her. Hopefully your vet has recommended a physical therapy/rehab plan for her. If not, you could request referral to a rehab therapist. My dog's leg is stiff and won't bend after surgery. Is this normal?

After surgical orthopedic procedures there can often be a loss of range of motion due to the healing process. This can be combated through physical therapy. I would highly recommend seeking the guidance of a rehabilitation veterinarian. They can create a therapy regimen for Pep and hopefully help her gain some mobility.
