What is this large, painless chest mass on my senior Doberman?

It could be a benign mass or tumor like a lipoma, or it could be something more serious. If the lump is new, if it seems painful, or if it is very firm and fixed in place you should encourage your friend to get it checked out by a veterinarian soon.

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. The accidents in the house are unlikely to be related to the mass. Unfortunately, it is near impossible to determinewhat the mass is without a physical exam and diagnostics. Ideally, Comet should be examined by a veterinarian. A fine needle aspirate can be done in the clinic to collect samples for pathology. This may identify what type of mass is on her chest. Treatment options can be discussed with the veterinarian once results are returned. Until then, monitor the lump for rapid change or growth, pain associated with it or restriction of movement. If any of these symptoms develop, Comet will need to be seen by a veterinarian.

Based on the pictures you provided, I suspect what you are seeing on Dede is what we call a sebaceous adenoma / cyst, which is benign. This type of skin mass is nothing to worry about but just monitor for the time being. These can become much larger and become infected on occasion, in which case they can be removed. You can also talk to your vet about freezing the mass off. Sometimes the freezing treatment may take 2 or 3 treatments before the mass falls off. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction! These could be lipomas, or fatty growths, that wouldn't necessarily require any treatment and can be common in older dogs. It's also possible that these are tumors. I would recommend having your vet examine Bella - they might recommend testing the lumps using a needle to determine what they are.

It could be a benign mass, like a skin tag, that has become irritated. There is unfortunately also a type of skin cancer called hemangiosarcoma that can look like this though. I would recommend taking her into your vet. They will likely ask you how long it has been there, about any changes in size/shape, and recommend a small skin biopsy. It could also be a cyst, lipoma, or benign growth. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed.
