My dog has a large, painless lump on her chest. What should I do?

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. It could be a benign mass or tumor like a lipoma, or it could be something more serious. If the lump is new, if it seems painful, or if it is very firm and fixed in place you should encourage your friend to get it checked out by a veterinarian soon.

Hello, sorry to hear about Izzy. That appears like small lump, which I suspect based not the brief history youve offered that it could just be a fatty tumor. These are typically benign and do not cause any discomfort to your pet. However, the best way to determine this is by having a physical exam and likely sampling the tumor to make sure there are no cancer cells that make up this mass. This lump needs to be checked and analysed as there are many conditions and types of tumors that could look like that. take her to the vet, they will perform a fine needle aspiration on the growth and send it to the lab for analysis. when the result comes, the vet will advise what needs to be done according to the diagnosis.

Typically, if a mass is not changing in size, and is soft and freely movable, most of these masses are benign and nothing to worry about. The only way to know for sure is for your veterinarian to sample some cells from the mass, either via a fine-needle aspirate, or with a larger biopsy and evaluate the cells under a microscope. Since it is small, soft, freely movable, and unchanged over the course of a year, your vet likely believes this mass is benign and feels comfortable having you monitor it at home.
