My senior dog has a black, blood-filled lump on her chest. What is it?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Thanks for the pictures! Many skin masses can look the same. Red dermal masses, like this one, can be benign or malignant. Some possibilities are an inflamed sebaceous adenoma, hemangioma, histiocytoma or it could be a Mast Cell Tumor. Since it showed up quickly I would have Oscar seen by your Vet. They can decide if aspirating it (sticking it with a needle and sending the slides to the lab) or removing the mass and sending it for biopsy is best. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I cannot determine what the mass is by the picture but it is definitely infected at this time. I recommend taking Chicken to the vet to diagnose the mass by sticking a needle in it and looking at the cells under the microscope. Once the mass is diagnosed a treatment plan can be made. Since it is infected the best option will likely be surgical removal. Good luck and kisses to Chicken!

I would recommend that you have Varna evaluated by a vet. From your description, she may have many small hemangiomas. These types of tumors are usually benign, but can keep popping up. If they rupture they can bleed and become infected. From the picture, the mass could be a hemangioma, or something else like a mast cell tumor. Your vet will be able to examine Varna, and may take a small sample of cells with a needle for examination under a microscope. Once they have a better idea of what the mass is made of, they can recommend an appropriate treatment, if any.

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. The accidents in the house are unlikely to be related to the mass. Hi and thank you for posting your question! From the picture, it looks like a skin tag which can grow over time and become larger. Usually these are not anything to worry too much about, although if it starts to become larger, red, swollen, or infected, you may want to have your veterinarian take a closer look. You can always have the mass aspirated and a sample sample taken from it to see if it is anything concerning. That is the only way to really definitively diagnosis any mass. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It always COULD be cancer - the only way to diagnose for sure is to remove it and send it to the lab. But I doubt it based on its current appearance. FAR more likely is that it’s a completely harmless “skin tag”. I’m not surprised at the color; even though her fur is fawn, you can see that Gracie’s actual skin is blackish in that area. Keep an eye on it. If it becomes suddenly big, hard, or seems to bother Gracie, get it checked out. Best of luck to you and Gracie!
