My bulldog ate something toxic, has kidney failure. Will she be okay?

Poor Miki! This may be reversible if it is acute renal disease, potentially secondary to the NSAIDs or hypotension during anesthesia. Miki should remain hospitalized on aggressive IV fluids, as this is the most important aspect of care with renal failure. The next few days are going to tell a lot as far as how he's responding to treatment. I hope he feels better soon!

Sounds like the worst is over for her as far as this exposure situation. I would continue to monitor her for any other signs of ongoing problems from the exposure like vomiting, depression, diarrhea, abdominal pain, hypersalivation, anorexia, tremors. If any of these signs return or linger, I would advise seeing your veterinarian ASAP. Kidney failure associated with toxin exposure is most often seen with an initial increase in thirst and urination frequency but as the kidneys become more damaged, they begin to shut down leading to a decreasing amount of urine produced. The kidneys can go into complete failure where no urine is produced at all and the pet quits urinating. So if you are noticing an increase in thirst and urination frequency/large volumes of urine produced or you notice no urination at all, I would consult your vet ASAP so they can get blood and urine to make sure the kidneys are functioning normally. Even if you don't see those signs and you want to make sure everything is ok, go to your vet and let them run some tests. In my opinion, sounds like the worst is over and preventing further exposure to the lily is all you need to do. Again, if you are concerned, your vet can run some tests on her urine and blood and evaluate her organ function. Good luck and I wish you and her the best!

In many cases of acute kidney injury, recovery is possible but not guaranteed. Intensive treatment is required to support her until her kidneys have a chance to recover and regular monitoring would be recommended to track any ongoing effects if she does recover

Those lab tests look great! Yes, in some cases acute renal failure can be completely reversible with IV fluids and supportive care. This usually happens within a few days to a few weeks, so yes - this time frame would certainly fit. I'm very happy to see that things have improved so much for Tahnee! :)

Poor Molly. Unfortunately without the full set of results it is very difficult to assess her condition and until the results are in it is impossible to predict the course of her illness. Kidney failure at such a young age is always a concern but some acute kidney injuries can undergo some degree of recovery of kidney function. It can be very helpful in patients with such complicated medical conditions to discuss lifestyle goals and warning flags which indicate her overall quality of life and if reached require reassessment of her management (eg - night wetting of bed/house, time spent playing with family members vs time spent sleeping/retiring to bed, voluntary food intake and maintaining body weight)

It looks like he is suffering from some liver and kidney values elevations and he also is anemic. (Low red blood cells). Since I do not not his current condition and how long this has been going on, it is difficult for me to give you a survival time. If this has happened quickly and could be a toxin then with aggressive therapy (hospitalization and IV fluids), then these values could go back to normal and stay that way as long as there wasn't any permanent damage. If this has been chronic and his urine is very dilute then this could be permanent damage to the kidneys which is a much poorer prognosis long term. I would still recommend hospitalization and IV fluids if possible. I would talk to your vet about whether he needs fluids, antibiotics, appetite stimulants, anti-nausea medicine etc. I hope this helps and your sweet baby gets well really soon!

Poor Bruno! I can see the brown material in his vomit and the very dark stool, which is likely digested blood. This happens because acids build up in the blood when they are not filtered by the kidneys, these acids are very caustic to the tissues of the stomach, and result in ulcers, which bleed. The prognosis depends on the cause of the kidney disease, as certain conditions can be treated and managed for some time, but unfortunately, the prognosis is typically poor to grave. Bruno likely needs fluids to prevent dehydration, and medication to protect the lining of his intestines. The kidneys are also responsible for making a hormone, erythropoeitin, which helps the bone marrow make new red blood cells. Along with the gastric bleeding, this is causing the drop in hemoglobin. The decision is not easy, but humane euthanasia may be an option to consider for Bruno, as kidney failure is known to be painful and very uncomfortable in humans. Unfortunately, treatments such as subcutaneous fluids and toxin binding agents such as Azodyl and Epakatin are palliative at best. I am happy to answer any additional questions you may have.
