My dog had pyometra surgery. Can her failed kidneys recover?

Those lab tests look great! Yes, in some cases acute renal failure can be completely reversible with IV fluids and supportive care. This usually happens within a few days to a few weeks, so yes - this time frame would certainly fit. I'm very happy to see that things have improved so much for Tahnee! :)

Poor Miki! This may be reversible if it is acute renal disease, potentially secondary to the NSAIDs or hypotension during anesthesia. Miki should remain hospitalized on aggressive IV fluids, as this is the most important aspect of care with renal failure. The next few days are going to tell a lot as far as how he's responding to treatment. I hope he feels better soon!

A pet who is suffering from a uterine infection doesn't need a special diet food, unless of course you are trying to get her to eat something while she awaits surgery at a later date. If she is also suffering from bad kidneys, then she needs to be on a prescription kidney diet such as Royal Canin Renal or Hil'ls K/D, prescribed by your vet. If her kidneys are healthy and it is just her uterus that is infected, then no special diet is needed. She just needs nutrition through her normal dog food or if she isn't eating her normal dog food, you can offer some boiled plain chicken and rice or tuna and rice to entice her to eat until she can have her surgery. Surgical complications of a pyometra surgey (infected uterus) are: systemic infection, wound dehiscence (opening of the surgery site) and of course the normal risks that come with anesthesia (heart rate drop, blood pressure drop, etc). Otherwise, we shouldn't expect any complications for any pet as long as the surgery is successful and you adhere to the after care instructions from your vet. Hello, sorry to hear about Laika. Success ratios for pyometras (infected uterus) may differ between regions. However, most pyometra surgeries are up to 90% successful. Complications associated with this surgery include bleeding, peritonitis, spread of infection and abnormal heart rhythms. In a paper published in 2014, they found that these complications can be seen post-operatively in about 25% of cases. Post surgery Laika should be exercise restricted for 2 weeks until her stitches (if any) are removed. She should wear a cone to avoid her licking at her own incision and your veterinarian will likely give you antibiotics and pain medications to give her at home. Not following strict exercise restriction and wearing a cone may lead to her incision re-opening up or becoming infected. Post the 2 week period, Laika may resume her normal lifestyle. The only way to avoid this disease is by spaying her in her early age. This is generally a big surgery, we are going into the abdomen to remove infected friable tissue. So therefore, it is no longer considered a routine spay and as previously discussed, there are some complications that can be associated wth this procedure. Unfortunately, the other option to treat medically has only been proven to be about 60% effective in one paper and 25% on most other papers with a high re-currence rate. Ultimately the complication for not treating the pyometra or failed medical treatment includes a widespread infection which could lead to death. I would recommend moving forward with the surgery as soon as possible as it is the best way to treat this disease. Hope this helps and best of luck.

I'm sorry Niomie is so sick. Pyometra is an infection of the uterus where the uterus basically fills with pus and infection. Dogs can become septic from this if the toxins and bacteria get into the bloodstream or if the uterus ruptures spilling the infection into the abdomen. Surgery is Niomies best chance at survival but this can be fatal even with the best of care and surgery. Surgery will remove the source of infection, but on recovery dogs still need fluids, pain medication and antibiotics post operative ly. Hoping that she pulls through and recovers well.

It's common for kidney values to improve with aggressive treatment (such as hospitalization for IV fluids). Sometimes they don't improve even with treatment, which would be a bad sign, or sometimes they improve while hospitalized, but don't stay improved. So, I can't get much idea about her prognosis from what they've told you so far. If they are happy with her progress, they will likely discharge her after 1-3 days and then have you come back to have her kidney values checked after a week, which will give you much more information. It's possible they are being vague because they just don't know yet -- it's impossible to know how she'll do out of the hospital. I'd recommend asking them what the next steps are, when she can go home, what treatments she'll need at home, and what the follow up testing will look like. You can also directly ask about prognosis. Precautionary measures include getting a physical exam and blood sample taken prior to surgery to make sure there are no underlying health issues that would compromise her ability to make through surgery or handle the anesthetic given during surgery. During surgery, her blood pressure, respiratory rate, and oxygen saturation should be monitored. IV fluids are typically given during surgery to help maintain blood pressure and provide hydration. After surgery, her incision may be iced every 2-3 hours and she may be given antibiotics and anti inflammatory medications. Her incision should be check within 24 hours after the surgery to ensure there is no bleeding occurring or fluid building underneath the incision. A recheck exam should be conducted within 10-14 days after surgery. I hope this helps!
