My dog has kidney failure. What advice can help save his life?

I'm very sorry to hear that. Make sure all your dogs are vaccinated for leptospirosis as this is one infection that could cause acute liver and kidney failure. Make sure you feed them a high quality diet as there seems to be a link between bad quality food and liver/kidney disease.

It depends on what is listed on the label of the vaccine. Please check it to be sure it lists leptospirosis. To answer your second question we have to know what the supplement is for in order to know if it is safe for the kidneys. Are we treating the kidneys? Are we treating for arthritis? Some supplements are filtered by the kidneys while others aren't. Also most medications are safe for most pets as long as there isn't already a kidney malfunction already there. Just because it is filtered by the kidneys does not mean it will automatically cause problems with the kidneys. Dogs do not always die from lepto but there will be those dogs that are quite sick and cannot make it. I would take her back into the vet immediately to get intensive care with them there including IV fluids and injectable medications to try to save her. I hope this helps.

Hi there and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach, I am sorry to hear of Cooper's diagnosis. This can be very hard to say without seeing Cooper first. The prognosis does depend on if the disease was caught early or late, and what treatments Cooper is currently receiving. Younger animals generally fair a bit worse with a leptospirosis infection than older animals. Typically, prognosis is better if caught early and not so good if caught late in the game as the leptospirosis bacteria can cause organ damage in late or advanced stages. Certainly with values as elevated as these are I am concerned about the kidney impairment due to this infection. Her protein is now on the decline as well which indicates further that her kidneys are now leading to a protein loss. Winter really needs to be hospitalized on continuous 24 hour IV fluids to hep reduce these levels and continue the antibiotic IV therapy until she responds as well as anti-vomiting medications to keep her comfortable. This infection does not respond right away in every case but it is very important that she receive adequate IV fluid therapy and antibiotics. I hope Winter gets better soon. Unfortunately this is a very severe and dramatic presentation and renal failure is not possibly reversed. Healing is unfortunately not possible even though this process can be slowed down. Hospitalisation and fluid therapy is highly recommended and nutritional support is needed.

If her lover and kidney values and urinalysis are normal, then I don’t think there will be any long-term effects and I would hesitate to adopt her! Make sure to keep her current on all vaccinations, including Lepto since she could get it again.
