My Husky has leptospirosis with kidney issues. Will she survive?

Hi there and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach, I am sorry to hear of Cooper's diagnosis. This can be very hard to say without seeing Cooper first. The prognosis does depend on if the disease was caught early or late, and what treatments Cooper is currently receiving. Younger animals generally fair a bit worse with a leptospirosis infection than older animals. Typically, prognosis is better if caught early and not so good if caught late in the game as the leptospirosis bacteria can cause organ damage in late or advanced stages. I'm so sorry to hear that Oreo has leptospirosis. Fortunately, most dogs (80-90%) do very well with treatment and fully recover. Dogs that are sick from leptospirosis should start to improve quickly once they are started on antibiotics, so if Oreo is not starting to feel better within 24 hours (or feels worse at any point), be sure to contact your veterinarian in case he needs additional treatment. Dogs do not always die from lepto but there will be those dogs that are quite sick and cannot make it. I would take her back into the vet immediately to get intensive care with them there including IV fluids and injectable medications to try to save her. I hope this helps.

If you are referring to the infection leptospirosis, then yes this can be cured though it normally requires a long course of therapy and patients unfortunately can die from this condition if not treated appropriately and in a timely fashion. Some patients need to be in the hospital if they are doing poorly most of the time when the liver is severely affected. Good luck and have a great day!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I’m so sorry to hear about Hachi. These are very serious diagnoses. Even with aggressive treatment, some puppies do not survive parvo or distemper. Having both at once is very serious and I would give Hachi a poor to grave prognosis. To have a liver problem on top of that could be even more serious, depending on what type of liver problem it is. Your post says 5 vaccines per day but I am thinking you mean 5 injections per day. These would include perhaps fluids, antibiotics, anti nausea medications, etc. Vaccines against distemper and parvo would not have any effect at this time and I do not recommend them for any sick pet. By all means it is your right to keep going with treatment but if she is getting worse instead of better or not improving after 5 days, I would recommend humane euthanasia. Dying of dehydration or continual seizures or liver failure are all horrible ways to go and are all possibilities for Hachi. Best wishes to you and Hachi.

It looks like he is suffering from some liver and kidney values elevations and he also is anemic. (Low red blood cells). Since I do not not his current condition and how long this has been going on, it is difficult for me to give you a survival time. If this has happened quickly and could be a toxin then with aggressive therapy (hospitalization and IV fluids), then these values could go back to normal and stay that way as long as there wasn't any permanent damage. If this has been chronic and his urine is very dilute then this could be permanent damage to the kidneys which is a much poorer prognosis long term. I would still recommend hospitalization and IV fluids if possible. I would talk to your vet about whether he needs fluids, antibiotics, appetite stimulants, anti-nausea medicine etc. I hope this helps and your sweet baby gets well really soon!

I can certainly understand being so worried about Hunter. Leptospirosis has a good prognosis if it is caught early and the animal is kept under intensive care the vet hospital. You are doing exactly the right thing by having him stay in the vet hospital, and he will be getting the best care there. Because I can't see him in person, I can't say his prognosis but it is a good thing your vet has good hope he will be fine. The vet would tell you if he had a poor chance. It's ok to be worried and not matter what anyone tells you, you are going to keep worrying about Hunter until he's finally healthy and released from the hospital. Check in with the vet daily, and I have fingers crossed he will be ok!
