Is my dog's kibble safe to eat if a mouse chewed through the bag?

Hello. Any food can become contaminated with bugs if it is not stored properly, or sits too long in a warehouse. Do not buy any damaged or repaired bags & avoid bags that are marked down in price. You can also avoid any problems at home by keeping an open bag of food in a tightly sealed container & only buying a months worth of food at a time. I would keep the bag and that cobweb piece and call the company. They may have you send the bag in and they will want the lot number on the bag. I would not feed Boss this bag of food and would go pick up a new bag. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Any type of bug found in your pets food is best avoided. Ants themselves aren't harmful if accidentally eaten by your pet, but they potentially can remove some nutrients from the food. A good way to keep the ants out of the food supply is to place the food in a plastic container. Not only will this keep ants out but dust mites as well, which often cause food allergy symptoms in pets. Also leave out just enough kibble where your pet finishes the meal. That way no left-overs are still in the bowl to attract the ants.

If the food is full of mouse droppings it is best to purchase new food ASAP. While treats can be given, they are not a balanced diet, and a new food should be purchased and given as soon as possible to avoid any illness or GI upset. In the future, placing their food in an airtight storage container made from plastic can help prevent rodents from getting to it.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If the bag containing the food was air tight and non-pourous it is likely fine. Even if it wasn’t stored with essential oils, 3 months is a long time to store dog food. We worry about mold formation and these foods usually have an expiration date. I’d remove the food from the closet with the essential oils. If it smells like the oils when you open the bag, discard the food. Have a good day

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Ziggy! Eating a mouse shouldn't be a big deal. Mice are intermediate hosts for some intestinal parasites and if the mouse died from eating rat/mouse poison it could be a problem. Since Ziggy is a big dog I doubt if the mouse died from eating rat poison he would be affected. As long as the vomiting and diarrhea are self limiting he should be ok. Hope this helps!
