Will dog food in sealed bag absorb essential oil smell after 3 months?

The recommendation of how long a food lasts is usually arbitrary and often not based on any studies, so it's difficult to say how accurate this information is. The oil should not spoil within a month. Check the sell by date on the bag. The oils should be stable until at least that date. Keep the bag in a cool dark place, and there should be no problem and the advertised amount of omega 3's should still be present.

Hello. Dog kibble has organic compounds like fats, just like any other perishable food might have. Generally, if a kibble is not used within a month , it is a good idea to put the remainder in the fridge or freezer to prevent the breakdown & loss of essential vitamins & nutrients & rancidity of the fatty acids. As long as the original package seal is not broken, a food might remain relatively fresh for months, but once opened, it is good to try & use the entire contents within 4-6 weeks. The dog food may be "fresh" and palatable, but it will have lost some aroma and definitely a lot of the vitamins. Usually Vitamins stay actively working for about 6 months, so if you have a bag that has been opened for longer than 6 months the quality of the food is less than when it was originally opened. You can feed the food, but realize, that its nutritional value may be lower than when the bag was opened. If the manufacturer tells you that after 18 months the food was as good as when it originally was opened, you want to see the respective research proving that. In my professional opinion: the faster you use up the food after opening, the better.

The most important thing to know is that some essential oils are purified to be consumed and some are not. I'm sure that the pet food companies use the purest of essential extracts and oils when making food due to the high likelihood of making pets sick which can cripple a company. The purified extracts and oils are made for pet and human consumption, having the other chemicals in them purified out. I'm sure it's ok and rosemary is under extensive study due to it's anti inflammatory properties and cancer fighting properties. Good question and good luck with Annabelle.

It can be difficult to recognize when food has spoiled, and there have been many food recalls lately for various problems like salmonella or other contaminants in food that could make your dog sick but wouldn’t be obviously detectable in the food. I would recommend sticking to foods that are produced by manufacturers with good quality control in place like Hill’s, Purina and Royal Canin. I would also recommend avoiding raw diets since there is potential for salmonella contamination. In general you should keep food at room temperature or a cool, dry place in a tightly sealed metal container or you can place the original bag in a plastic container. Make sure you buy a bag that your dog can eat in 4-6 weeks or the oils could become rancid.
