Is kennel cough vaccine safe for a dog with a grade 1 heart murmur?

Actually it sounds like that grooming facility is very responsible. There are two types of bordetella vaccines, one is an injection of killed vaccine, the other is a live vaccine that is given orally. Bordetella vaccinations should be repeated every six months to a year. The live vaccine is much more effective. The bordetella vaccination given twice a year will not harm your dog and will ensure higher protective titres, and so protect your dog much more effectively from kennel cough.

Great question! Heartgard can safely be given to puppies as young as six weeks of age, so it's fine to give it to her now. You don't need to wait for two weeks after her 4th vaccine, there's no problem with them being given together. It is recommended to wait at least two weeks between vaccines for different vaccines, so yes I would wait for two weeks after her 4th vaccine to get her rabies. The kennel cough can be given safely intranasally (in the nose) at the same time as her 4th vaccine or with the rabies. You don't need to wait for that. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Kennel cough is very contagious and can be bacterial and/or viral. The bordetella vaccine can help shorten the course of disease if your dog is exposed, but does not prevent infection. With a deep cleaning and decontamination, the daycare facility should be able to eliminate it for now. Great job of them letting their customers know of the illness at their facility! I would wait at least a week to make sure they haven't had any more infected dogs.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! After the treatment for kennel cough if the dog is doing well there is no further treatment. He may have a lingering cough when excited but that is normal. He can have his regular vaccines 2 weeks after the treatment was started. The Vanguard 7 is not a vaccine for kennel cough however. That is a distemper/parvo/hepatitis combination. I would recommend getting a kennel cough vaccine to lessen the severity if kennel cough should he come into contact with it again. He can have his vaccinations 2-3 weeks apart, so you can ask your vet to do the 11 week vaccine 3-4 days earlier and then do the third vaccine the day before you travel. This should work. Your puppy will have good protection, but the full protection will not be until about two weeks after the last vaccine. Make sure he also has a bordetella vaccination before going to the boarding facility, preferably at the next to last vaccination date so he can make sufficient antibodies by the time he goes to boarding.

Yes, kennel cough is very common and spreads very easily. Pets who receive the vaccine may still get kennel cough (just like people can still get the flu even though they had the vaccine), but they tend to get less sick IF they end up getting the infection.
