Is twice-yearly Bordetella for kennel cough safe for my dog?

However, we recommend it every 6 months because boarding facilities, groomers, day cares and other places where dogs are social recommend every 6 months. It will not hurt to use it either way. Yes, this vaccine is safe for your dog. It is important that he have enough time to build up immunity after the vaccine prior to boarding. For first time Bordetella vaccines, it is typically a series of two given 3-4 weeks apart. You want the second vaccine to be given at least 2 weeks before his boarding appointment. The Bordatella vaccine is what we call "modified live" . This means that the actual virus is altered slightly to make it non-infectious, but still recognizable and stimulating to the immune system. If your dog is coughing, my suspicion is she contracted it based on exposure pre-vaccine. Generally this virus will run its' course within a month, but antibiotics can help prevent any secondary bacterial infections. A cough suppressant can also help keep her more comfortable.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The Bordatella vaccine is used to prevent ONE cause of Kennel Cough caused by the bacteria Bordatella Bronchiseptica. Most boarding facilities, doggie day cares and groomers require it as it is contagious between dogs. If Nina goes to these places or goes to dog parks or plays with other dogs a lot then it is recommended to give. It is an elective vaccine though, meaning it is your choice. Living with 5 other dogs is a risk if one of them gets it some where. Kennel cough isn't deadly just annoying to you and the dog because the cough is very loud. Since you started the vaccine I would finish it can decide next year whether you want to continue it. Good luck!

Kennel cough vaccines are generally a single dose every 12montgs and ideally i would not give 3days either side of an anesthetic or surgical procedure. It should be administered 7-10days before mixing with other dogs such s in kennels, classes or shows

The intranasal form has the fastest onset of protection. It is not considered a core vaccine, but more a lifestyle vaccine. If your dog will be boarded or kenneled for any reason it is highly recommended. If he will go to the groomers or be around new dogs at a dog park or anything, or you take him places with you, then i would get it to protect him. If he is not exposed to those things and just stays at home, then it is not needed

Bordetella vaccine can be given to puppies from 8 weeks of age. The rabies vaccine will have to be repeated at 12 to 16 weeks (depending on your state's law) as maternal antibodies will destroy it and your puppy will not develop an immunity against rabies at this age. It is unlikely that your puppy will have any detrimental effect from those vaccines given at the age of 8 weeks. Whether the bordetella vaccine needs to be given again will depend on the type and brand of the vaccine. I suggest you follow the advice of your veterinarian. Accidents like this can happen, and it is likely that the tech who filled out your initial admission made a mistake when entering the information in the computer.
