What are the chances my dog gets kennel cough from a shared water bowl?

Kennel cough is spread through the air and by improper hygiene. Therefore, it could be spread to a dog that has no contact with other dogs if a human in the household was touching an infected dog and didn't wash up afterward, or by the dog being housed in an area where and infected dog had been recently. The chances of transmission by human contact are much less likely than being in a kennel situation, but still possible.

The vaccine does not cover against every kind of organisms that can cause kennel cough, so your dies have a possibility of contracting it. But your dog can only spread it if infected. Just because your was exposed does not mean he is a carrier or contagious to other dogs unless he is showing symptoms

While rabies can be transmitted through saliva I don't believe there has ever been a report of rabies being transmitted through sharing a water bowl. I would definitely recommend making sure Toby's rabies vaccine is up to date if there are potentially rabid animals around, but there is minimal potential for transmission.

Not likely but possible. Viruses are usually species specific, but some bacteria can be spread from dog to cat. The bacteria (Bordatella bronchiseptica) most often responsible for kennel cough in dogs can infect cats. Other opportunistic bacteria can also be spread.

That is a good question. So, the vaccine does not suddenly stop working after 6 months, but will provide Bobbie Jo the best protection from those viruses for the first 6 months after vaccination. In order for Bobbie Jo to infect another dog, she would need to be infected with one of those viruses, then spread them to another dog. Those are respiratory viruses, so the most common way they are spread is through secretions from the nose and mouth, but a bite is not needed for transmission. Most commonly a dog will cough or sneeze in an area and infect the area and other dogs. So, the concern for Bobbie Jo would be if she were exposed to a dog that was infected with one of those viruses that she would be more susceptible to them if her vaccination was overdue. Kennel cough is transmitted similarly to the common cold- so with direct contact or by sharing bowls or even by germs transferred from your hands after petting the coughing puppy. So keeping them separately is ideal if feasible, and washing your hands between handling each of them is also advised. Since kennel cough is transmitted by aerosol and direct contact you wound have to keep their kennels very separate (like in different rooms). I am not sure if your frenchie is already being treated , but Kennel cough is often viral and self limiting. But sometimes a cough suppressant or antibiotic is indicated depending on signs. I would watch him closely and have him evaluated (if you haven’t already) if he becomes lethargic, if his appetite decreases, if his respiratory rate is increased or if there is thick nasal discharge.
