My dog got Interceptor Plus and Heartgard Plus a week apart. Is he okay?

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 5 years and 10 months old | 75 lbs

I've given my 75lb german shepherd 2 doses: 1 dose today of interceptor plus (23 mg milbemycin/228 mg praziquantel) and 1 dose of Heartgard plus (272 mcg ivtermectin/227 mg pyrantel) 1 week ago. Is he going to be ok?

Yes, this should be okay.

Although both are oral heart worm and intestinal parasite preventatives and typically speaking, giving two heart worm preventatives together or within a short amount of time is not recommended, combining these two preventatives together accidentally one week apart should not result in a negative reaction. Sam may have some transient diarrhea or vomiting, however.

Fortunately, those drugs do not typically interact negatively with each other and theoretically should not cause any issue. I would monitor for any vomiting, inappetence, excessive sedation, incoordination, etc. for 24 hours but wouldn't anticipate that you would see any signs. If you are concerned or she begins acting abnormally, I would recommend reaching out to your regular veterinarian or ASPCA poison control for further advice.

Is it safe to give dog dewormer and Heartgard at the same time?

No worries. There is a wide safetly margin with the amount of dewormer a pet can have in one sitting. Olive will be just fine with the dewormer and heartworm prevention given at the same time. : ) In fact we give heartworm prevention and bi-annual dewormers together all the time. Can I give my dog Advantage Multi and Interceptor Plus together?

Yes, you can give both products at the same time and Charlie will likely do fine. If you want to be extra cautious, separate them by two days. Neither product had activity against ticks. If ticks are a concern where you live, you can switch the products to something like Simparica for fleas and ticks and the Interceptor for heartworms and intestinal worms. There’s not really a reason to use three different products. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Is it safe to give my dog Interceptor and Revolution together?

Hi there. While there's technically no reason that these two medications can't be used together, they are both heartworm preventatives - so there's quite a bit over overlap in what they do, and both should not be needed at the same time. If your pup is currently on Interceptor and you want to add a second medication to cover fleas, I would recommend using something like Nexgard or Bravecto - these are flea/tick meds only, so you wouldn't be treating her unnecessarily for heartworms with two different meds.
