Is it okay if my dog's insulin shot is an hour late or early today?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 6 years and 10 months old | 40 lbs

How much variation in insulin administration time is acceptable for dogs? With the recent time change our 6:30 AM feeding time became 5:30 so was it ok to wait and feed/give insulin an hr later than scheduled? Generally Is an hr late better than an hr early for giving insulin? We are less than a week into this new adventure! Help!

Hi there

An hour modification is just fine. Typically you don't want to vary more than that, but sometimes life happens and longer duration occur.

As long as your dog is eating, you are okay to give the insulin an hour late.

Best wishes to you and Athena! Thanks for using Pet Coach!
