How to time feeding a diabetic cat around insulin injections?

How necessary is it to feed the cat and wait half an hour before giving the injection? And how long should you wait before letting her eat after the injection?

Based upon the context of your question, I'm assuming that you are inquiring about the timing of insulin injections in a diabetic cat. If this is the case, yes, it is best to feed Kitty and then wait half an hour before giving her a dose of insulin. The reason for this is that eating food increases the blood glucose (sugar) level shortly after eating. Insulin then forces the glucose into the cells so that her body is able to use this glucose as an appropriate energy source. Diabetic animals should be fed twice daily half an hour before each dose of insulin. Food or treats throughout the day should be avoided since they will cause random spikes in the blood glucose. It is recommended to feed diabetics twice a day right before the insulin is given. I would recommend against leaving food out since it won't help regulate his glucose. I would try a little wet food when you feed Bella meals. She may want to eat more of that instead of dry food at that time. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Its very important that she eats a good amount before the insulin injection, otherwise she could get low blood sugar. Most people leave the dry food out at all times and then offer the canned food when it's time for the injections. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.

My diabetic dog ate cat food. When should I give his next insulin?

I would wait about 12 hours after his last dose of insulin. I would also make sure he eats something before giving the insulin at that time. If you are not going to be up at the 12 hour mark I would recommend holding off the insulin until tomorrow. If you give the insulin now you risk his glucose going to low even if he just ate. Diabetic cat won't eat for insulin. How to change food and treats?

I would recommend to cut them very gradually over two or three weeks time and do the same with food. This will allow his organism to adapt and maintain appetite (so you can give insulin).In the long term Metabolic food (Hills) (low carbohydrates and higher protein content) should be preferred. Hello. Depending on the insulin, yes, it is best to distribute the insulin twice a day to coincide with two meals a day. I just do not think it is appropriate to feed a diabetic dog only once a day. I believe you can get much better control if you divide his total daily calories into 2 meals spaced every 12 hours, & to give the total insulin, also divided into 2 even doses. When to check my diabetic cat's blood sugar: before or after insulin?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I think this is Veterinarian preference. If your Vet wants you to be doing this at home, double check with them on what time they want you to check Nappy's blood sugar so they can accurately guide you on changes. With that being said, I like the reading to be right before the insulin is due to be given or 6 hours AFTER it has been given (which should be the lowest point of the day). I sometimes have owners do full blood sugar curves at home, which requires measuring the blood sugar every 2 hours for 12 hours, starting right before the morning dose of insulin. I hope this helps!
